Sen. John Fetterman on Sunday defended the integrity of Pennsylvania's 2020 election, rejected claims that hundreds of thousands of noncitizens are on the state's voter rolls, and said renewed focus on the election distracts from more pressing issues, including the conflict with Iran.

The Pennsylvania Democrat, who served as his state's lieutenant governor during the 2020 election, said the state's election "was absolutely secure, fair, and accurate."

"I've appeared on your network and many other networks at that time," Fetterman said on CNN's "State of the Union." "The election was absolutely secure, fair, and accurate. That was the voice of Pennsylvania. And they picked Joe Biden in 2020. That's a fact."

Fetterman's comments came in response to Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin's allegations last week that more than 250,000 noncitizens are on voter rolls in several states, including Pennsylvania, and warned election officials they could face penalties if they fail to cooperate with the Trump administration's review.

Fetterman said he has seen no evidence to support allegations that hundreds of thousands of noncitizens are registered to vote.

"Until I see evidence that over a quarter million migrants are registered to vote, then, yeah, that would make me reconsider some of these things," he said. "But there's no evidence, and I don't expect that we'll see any of that."

He also questioned why the Trump administration continues to revisit the 2020 election.

"I don't know why the president is dragging up all of this stuff," Fetterman said. "You're the president. Do something positive, and you are talking about 2020. That's been settled over six years ago. It's deeply unhelpful. And that distracts from important things, especially like the Iranian war right now."

Asked about the deaths of two U.S. service members following Iranian missile and drone attacks in Jordan, Fetterman defended President Donald Trump's strategy toward Tehran and said continued pressure on Iran is warranted.

"I think it's incredibly important to confront Iran and to confront Iran with their ambitions, specifically the nuclear ambitions," he said. "Every single Democrat that I'm aware of says we must never let Iran build a nuclear bomb."

Fetterman said decades of negotiations have failed to curb Iran's ambitions.

"I think we're at an important point in our time," he said. "I think it's entirely appropriate to continue to confront Iran."

He also praised the elimination of leaders of Iran and its proxy groups, saying, "Eliminating Hamas leadership, eliminating Hezbollah leadership or Iran, that makes things safe and more just."

Toward the end of the interview, Fetterman also doubled down on previous comments that he could leave the Democratic Party if it officially adopts what he views as an anti-Israel platform.

He said he would reconsider his party affiliation if Democrats abandon military aid to Israel while adding that such a move would be "more of a statement" because his voting record would remain the same.
