Pakistan's Foreign Ministry announced Saturday that technical-level talks involving representatives of the United States and Iran will take place Sunday in Bürgenstock, Switzerland, as part of efforts to advance the recently signed Islamabad memorandum of understanding.
In a statement, the ministry said representatives from the United States and Iran will participate in the discussions alongside mediators from Pakistan and Qatar.
Vice President JD Vance confirmed Saturday in Washington that top U.S. negotiators Jared Kushner and Steve Witkoff were already in Switzerland and working through technical details related to negotiations over Iran's nuclear program, according to The Associated Press.
The talks are the latest step in the diplomatic process launched after the signing of the Islamabad MOU, which established a framework for negotiations aimed at easing tensions between Washington and Tehran and addressing a range of regional security issues.
Pakistan said it would continue to play a mediating role in the process.
"Pakistan will continue to facilitate the process in its role as mediator," the Foreign Ministry said.
The announcement comes amid questions about the future of the agreement after Iranian officials signaled dissatisfaction with what they described as U.S. failures to fully implement aspects of the accord.
Iranian officials have indicated that while they are willing to attend talks in Switzerland, progress toward a final agreement may depend on what Tehran views as fulfillment of existing commitments under the memorandum.
State media said the team includes parliamentary Speaker Mohammad Bagher Qalibaf, Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi and central bank and oil officials, among others.
Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmail Baghaei said the visit was intended to press the other side to fulfill its obligations and warned that the memorandum of understanding could be jeopardized if commitments are not implemented.
Bürgenstock has hosted several high-profile diplomatic meetings in recent years and is considered a neutral venue for sensitive international negotiations.
The talks are expected to focus on implementation issues related to the memorandum of understanding and preparations for broader negotiations in the weeks ahead.
