Iran's Top Negotiator Warns Trump Against Escalation

Iran's top negotiator warned Thursday that President Donald Trump's threats to strike Iran and seize control of its oil and gas industries could trigger a wider crisis.

"Wrong strategies and impulsive decisions will reset the entire board for the worse, explode energy infrastructure and markets and create an endless quagmire that you will be stuck in for years," Mohammad Bagher Qalibaf, Iran's parliamentary speaker, wrote in a post on X.

"You will see a different Iran."

Qalibaf has been at the forefront of Iran's negotiating team as the two sides hold talks amid an uneasy ceasefire.

On Thursday morning, Trump threatened to escalate attacks against the country, vowing to hit Iran "VERY HARD TONIGHT" in a Truth Social post.

"At some point in the not too distant future, we will be taking Kharg Island, and other oil infrastructure points, and assume total control of their Oil and Gas Markets, much like we have with Venezuela, which is working out brilliantly for both Venezuela and the United States of America," he added.

Trump later said he had called off the strikes, crediting progress in discussions with high-level Iranian leadership as cause for the sudden change.

"Discussions and final points have been, in both concept and great detail, approved by all parties involved, including the United States, Israel, Saudi Arabia, UAE [United Arab Emirates], Qatar, Turkey, Pakistan, Bahrain, Kuwait, Jordan, Egypt, and others," he said in a post on Truth Social.

"The Naval Blockade will remain in full force and effect until this Transaction is finalized — Time and place of the signing to be announced shortly."

Earlier Thursday, the U.S. and Iran traded strikes, pushing the Middle East closer to the resumption of a full-scale war.

It was the third time this week that back-and-forth strikes have rattled the Middle East, though strikes have been more limited compared to the early weeks of the war.
