Interior Ends 36 Partnerships Over DEI, Activism

The Trump administration has cut ties between the Interior Department and more than three dozen organizations linked to environmental activism and diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives, a move that officials say will save taxpayers about $4 million.

The Department of the Interior announced the action after reviewing roughly 2,000 active agreements with outside groups.

Officials said many of the partnerships no longer align with administration priorities or fail to "provide a clear benefit."

According to a department press release obtained by Fox News, the department is "ending partnerships with groups that no longer represent the priorities of the American people."

The move is part of President Donald Trump's push to root out government waste, fraud, and abuse and reduce spending across federal agencies.

Among the organizations affected is the Hispanic Access Foundation, which has promoted scholarship opportunities for undocumented immigrants.

In 2021, HAF President and CEO Maite Arce described "Dreamers" as one of the "most vulnerable communities" during the COVID-19 pandemic because of their "limited resources."

"When DACA [Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals] was first established, it provided Dreamers the ability to go to school, have a job, have a driver's license, etc.," Arce said in a statement.

"Now, many Dreamers are in school, have a degree, or are serving in the military. They are a part of our community, and contribute to our country's prosperity."

Interior officials also reportedly cited Conservation International, saying the organization supports policies aimed at phasing out fossil fuels.

Another group targeted in the review is The Cultural Landscape Foundation, which holds a cooperative agreement with the National Park Service and has opposed several Trump administration initiatives.

Fox reported that the organization has challenged administration actions involving the Kennedy Center, criticized plans for a White House ballroom, and highlighted sites it says are threatened by administration policies through its "Landslide 2026: Erasing American History" initiative.

"Under President Trump and Secretary [Doug] Burgum, the Department of the Interior is taking decisive action to ensure its partnerships and resources support the priorities of this administration and the interests of the American people," Matthew Middleton, principal deputy communications director and director of research at the department, told the outlet.

"Interior will continue to invest in partnerships that expand access to public lands, promote responsible stewardship, and deliver tangible benefits to the American people," he added.

The Interior Department's actions mirror similar cost-cutting efforts across the administration, including reforms announced by Environmental Protection Agency Administrator Lee Zeldin that the agency says will save approximately $300 million annually.
