Immigration and Customs Enforcement has been conducting law enforcement operations in New York City, The Hill reported.

The operations began in Queens on Monday and will move to the Long Island suburbs, according to the report.

ICE is targeting people with prior immigration detainers that were not upheld, including ICE requests to other law enforcement agencies for information about an immigrant's custody status and to hold the immigrant longer than they normally would.

White House border czar Tom Homan had previously said a surge of officers to the city was coming.

The move comes after a man allegedly set a fire outside 26 Federal Plaza in Lower Manhattan, which houses ICE offices and other federal agencies.

"We have already increased our presence in New York," Homan said on Newsmax last week.

"We're going to increase our presence more. We're going to have a surge operation in New York. I'm not going to tell you when," Homan said.

New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani has called for ICE to be abolished, following the shooting of Lorenzo Salgado Araujo earlier this month.

"New York City stands with the Salgado family in demanding a full, independent investigation and real accountability," Mamdani said.

"To the Salgado family and any immigrant family in this city living in fear: we grieve with you and we will continue to stand beside you in the pursuit of justice. Abolish ICE," Mamdani said earlier this month.

Homan said on Newsmax that New York Gov. Kathy Hochul's decision to end cooperation agreements between ICE and local jails has made immigration arrests more difficult.

"When Gov. Hochul signed legislation ending our relationship with the 287(g) program and ending our relationship with jails, that means rather than one agent wrestling one bad guy in a jail, now we've got to send a whole team to do the same thing that took one agent to do," Homan said.

"So of course, we've got to increase resources because she took the efficiencies away."
