California Gov. Gavin Newsom said President Donald Trump has directed the Department of Justice to investigate him and his wife, accusing the administration of targeting him because he is considering a run for president.

In a post on X, Newsom said that he and his wife, Jennifer Siebel Newsom, had become part of Trump's "hit list" and that federal authorities were searching for wrongdoing despite finding no evidence of criminal conduct.

"Today, my wife & I joined Donald Trump's hit list," Newsom wrote. "He has directed his Department of Justice to investigate us. They have not found a crime - they are simply trying to find one."

Newsom, a Democrat, did not provide evidence to support his claim, and the Department of Justice had not publicly announced any investigation involving him or his wife.

The White House did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

The California governor, who has emerged as one of Trump's most prominent political critics, suggested the alleged scrutiny was politically motivated.

"He isn't coming after me because of mean tweets, but because I am considering running for President," Newsom said.

Newsom is widely viewed as a potential presidential contender after completing his second term as governor.

He has increased his national profile in recent years through frequent appearances on cable news, public clashes with Republican governors and criticism of Trump administration policies.

In his social media post, Newsom accused Trump of retaliating against political opponents and called him "the most corrupt President in American history."

"We have nothing to hide," Newsom added. "Mr. President, come after me. I am not going anywhere."

The latest exchange adds to a long-standing feud between Trump and Newsom that has intensified in Trump's second term. The two have frequently sparred over immigration enforcement, environmental regulations, homelessness, disaster response, and federal funding.

Newsom has positioned himself as a leading Democrat opposing the administration, often using social media and public appearances to challenge White House policies and rhetoric.

The governor concluded his post by framing the dispute as a test of government accountability.

"The country is watching," Newsom wrote.
