FBI Fires 2 Analysts in Georgia Election Inquiry

The FBI fired two intelligence analysts last week after they raised concerns that the bureau's investigation of the 2020 election in Fulton County, Georgia, lacked sufficient evidence, according to sources cited by CBS News.

The dismissals come as the FBI intensifies its review of ballots and election records seized this year in its investigation of the 2020 election.

"The FBI will always investigate credible allegations of matters related to federal elections," an FBI spokesperson told CBS. "Every employee at this FBI is expected to uphold our mission and adhere to our standards — any deviation will not be tolerated."

The firings were first reported over the weekend by MS NOW.

Earlier this year, the FBI executed a search warrant and seized all physical ballots cast in Fulton County in the 2020 election, along with vote-tabulating machine tapes, ballot images, and voter rolls. The bureau assigned roughly 260 analysts to examine the records.

According to CBS, the analysts have until Friday to complete the review. They have been instructed to compare voter information, including names, addresses, and voter identification numbers against the commercial Accurint database and identify any discrepancies.

Sources told CBS that some analysts objected to the process, arguing the database is not always current and that mismatched records do not necessarily indicate voter fraud or criminal conduct.

Others questioned whether any charges could be brought because the likely five-year statute of limitations for potential election-related offenses may have already expired.

The review has also fueled debate over the broader investigation.

CBS reported that some involved fear the findings could be used to reignite questions about the 2020 election or strengthen support for the Trump-backed SAVE America Act, which would require proof of U.S. citizenship to register to vote in federal elections.

The FBI investigation was referred by Justice Department attorney Kurt Olsen, who previously challenged the 2020 election results and represented Kari Lake in litigation after Arizona's 2022 gubernatorial race.

Olsen is now part of a Justice Department team investigating what it describes as an alleged conspiracy involving Obama- and Biden-era officials.

Fulton County officials have reportedly sought to block the investigation in court.

A judge in May denied the county's request to have the seized ballots returned, but earlier this month another judge quashed a grand jury subpoena seeking the names and personal contact information of everyone who worked the county's 2020 election.
