President Donald Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu spoke by phone Friday and agreed to meet soon in the U.S. for what would be their first meeting since the Iran war began.

Netanyahu congratulated Trump on America's 250th anniversary and said that "the U.S. is what ensures the freedom of the world, and Israel greatly appreciates the tight bond between the nations," The Times of Israel reported, citing a statement from Netanyahu's office.

"Prime Minister Netanyahu and President Trump agreed to meet soon in the U.S.," the statement said.

Netanyahu's office said the prime minister emphasized Israel's security needs in discussions on Iran and agreed with Trump to maintain close coordination and contact.

"During the meeting, they discussed the negotiations with Iran, Gaza, and regional developments," Netanyahu's office said, according to The Jerusalem Post. "The prime minister emphasized the state of Israel's security needs in the context of the negotiations, and the two agreed to continue their coordination and close contact."

Newsmax reached out to the White House for comment.

Trump and Netanyahu last met Feb. 11 at the White House, where the leaders discussed diplomatic efforts regarding Iran.

Seventeen days later, the U.S. and Israel launched a joint military operation targeting Iran's political leadership and military infrastructure.

Tensions between the longtime allies have flared in recent weeks as Trump seeks a negotiated settlement with Iran over its nuclear program.

The tensions splashed into public view when Trump said on the "Pod Force One" podcast that he cursed at Netanyahu during a June 1 phone call over Israel's military operation in southern Lebanon against Iranian-backed Hezbollah terrorists.

Netanyahu has publicly downplayed the friction as standard "tactical disagreements" between "great friends."

Trump has likewise said the broader U.S.-Israeli alliance remains "tremendous," praising Israel as a courageous ally.
