President Donald Trump suggested Cuba could follow a path similar to Venezuela's, saying such a scenario is "possible" as his administration continues to shape its policy toward the communist-run island.

In an interview with Axios, Trump was asked whether a Cuba operation could unfold in a manner similar to the administration's recent efforts involving Venezuela.

"Possibly. It's possible," Trump said.

The president noted the geographic proximity of both countries to the United States, contrasting them with more distant foreign policy challenges.

"These places are close by. Whereas if you look at Iran, that's a very long trip," Trump said.

"Venezuela is relatively close and Cuba is a hopscotch."

Trump also pointed to what he sees as a major difference between the two countries: natural resources.

"Venezuela has oil. Cuba doesn't," he said.

"Cuba has a nice property and they have nice shoreline," Trump said.

The comments came as Trump indicated Cuba is interested in improving relations with Washington.

"Cuba wants to talk very badly," he said, adding that Secretary of State Marco Rubio would likely play a leading role in any future discussions.

"We're going to have Marco get involved," Trump said.

Rubio, a Cuban American and longtime critic of the Cuban government, has been one of the administration's most influential voices on Latin American policy.

He has consistently advocated maintaining pressure on both Havana and Caracas while supporting democratic opposition movements in the region.

Trump did not elaborate on what a Cuba initiative might entail or whether any formal talks are imminent.

However, his remarks suggested the administration views Cuba and Venezuela as part of a broader Western Hemisphere strategy as it weighs future diplomatic and economic policies toward both countries.
