Residents were told to shelter-in-place due to possible hazardous materials after a freight train derailed in Bensalem Township, Pennsylvania, Tuesday afternoon.
The CSX train was traveling on the tracks at East Bristol Road and Grove Avenue near the Neshaminy Falls Train Station around 2 p.m. when at least 13 train cars derailed, officials said.
Police, firefighters, medics and Hazmat teams responded to the derailment and are assessing the content of the train cars. A CSX spokesperson told NBC10 no injuries were reported. Bucks County Emergency Management is reporting the derailment as a hazardous materials incident, however.
While officials have not revealed what material the train was carrying, they warned residents that possible exposure may cause difficulty breathing, loss of coordination and a burning sensation in the eyes, nose, throat or lungs.
Nearby residents were told to stay away from the area, go inside immediately and shelter-in-place. Residents were also warned to close their windows, doors and vents. They were also told to turn off their air conditioning systems and stay indoors until further notice.
A staging area was set up at the Neshaminy Mall. Bristol Road is currently closed between Brownsville Road and Old Lincoln Highway due to the derailment.
Officials have not yet revealed the cause of the derailment.
