I’ve questioned the determination in some quarters to hate on Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey before seeing it. Much of this corner of the internet spread and basked in the fake news that “Elliot” Paige was going to play Helen of Troy or a goddess.
I’m not in principle bothered by the use of a lower register in some scenes, “My dad” and the like. And I’m especially not bothered that mythical foes of Odysseus are wearing medieval rather than ancient armor. If the Laestrygonians are mythic, why can’t they be “futuristic” for their time too?
Now the tracking numbers coming out of Hollywood, and the lack of seats available in my local theaters this weekend, attest to the fact that this is likely to be a smash success commercially, and proof that Nolan’s name drives people to the movie theaters.
