In my column today, I mention that the Democratic Socialists of America have taken the official position that the Senate should be abolished. I should note that this is impossible under the Constitution — even with a constitutional amendment.

Article V, setting forth the procedure for amending the Constitution, makes two exceptions. No amendment can be made prior to 1808 affecting the importation of slaves. And “no State, without its Consent, shall be deprived of its equal Suffrage in the Senate.” There’s no time limit on that one.

I can imagine creative ways to get around that provision — zero suffrage for all is equal! — but the point seems pretty clear.
