Pope Leo has written to the leaders of the Society of Saint Pius X, the traditionalist fraternity of priests founded by French Archbishop Marcel Lefebvre after the Second Vatican Council to preserve the traditional Latin liturgy, and (crucial to their identity), the traditional formation of priests.
The SSPX has telegraphed its intention to consecrate four new bishops on July 1 without the pope’s permission, in order to preserve the Society. They argue that the crisis of faith in the church after the council has created a “state of necessity” for such an action because “the salvation of souls” is the highest goal. This would be a reprise of the 1988 action which led to their excommunication. The Society, in the 20 years afterward, only grew, and eventually Pope Benedict lifted the penalty. Pope Francis even granted their priests legal faculties to hear confessions and perform weddings licitly.
I’m hoping at least for some kind of pause, and sincere talks to repair this wound in the church. I have hope that Leo will stop going after traditionalists who are in regular communion with the church. And that upon that foundation, a non-hostile relationship with the SSPX can be built. But I’m preparing for the worst.
