Some of America’s most prestigious colleges and universities seem to be waking up to the fact that they have drifted far away from their educational missions. They have allowed leftist ideology to shove aside objective teaching and the search for truth.

Recently, Harvard Medical School did a study on itself, acknowledging the problem and the need for change. In today’s Martin Center article, David Randall looks rather skeptically at the study.

He writes, “Harvard Medical School (HMS) has just released the Report of the HMS Open Inquiry Working Group, which contains detailed recommendations for restoring liberty to the school. These recommendations, if put into practice, would institute significant reform at HMS. But that is very important—and even if successful, they would leave vital work undone.”

The good news is that top brass at HMS realize that ideological activism has become prominent in the school and regard that as a bad thing. Such non-medical matters as climate change and conflict in the Middle East loom large on campus, leaving students and faculty who don’t have the right “progressive” views fearing that they’ll be attacked by woke zealots.

Randall continues, “The Report indicates that activists now are a substantial portion of the HMS administration, faculty, and students. It recommends that HMS take vigorous action to restore open inquiry to HMS. But how is this to be done if it is to be entrusted to staff, teachers, and students who support activism on principle and are dedicated to castrating open inquiry wherever it conflicts with their activist ideals?”

Harvard Medical School can talk about its DEI problem, but will it carry through with any action? In all likelihood, the activists will keep right on as they have, perhaps more covertly.

Randall concludes that it will take outside force to cure Harvard Med of its political infection.
