Trump told the Russian leader that an end to the Ukrainian conflict could herald a 'new quality of US-Russia ties' and claimed the US is nearing peace deal with Iran

Donald Trump has told Vladimir Putin that an end to the war in Ukraine is "vital" and that he is prepared to help broker peace.

The two leaders spoke during a 55-minute call as Trump celebrated his 80th birthday on Sunday, with the US president telling Putin that an end to fighting in the region could herald a "new quality of US-Russia ties," Kremlin foreign policy adviser Yuri Ushakov said.
Trump also claimed the US was nearing a peace deal with Iran, and that he "expects the results of the difficult but ultimately successful negotiations can be made public already today," Ushakov added.
"As regards the Ukrainian conflict, Donald Trump again emphasised that a cessation of hostilities was vital," Ushakov told reporters in comments posted on the Kremlin website.
"He said he was ready to act with European partners and Kyiv, including in talks at the G7 summit," he added. Ushakov also quoted Trump as saying that a quick resolution would allow "perspectives to open for a new quality of US-Russian relations."
Putin also wished Trump a happy 80th birthday in an "informal" manner, Ushakov said.
"Dear Mr President, dear Donald, I wholeheartedly congratulate you, such a bright, remarkable person and politician, on your 80th birthday!," the Russian leader said.
He added that he "valued the mutual understanding between us, which allows us to discuss [...] even the most complex issues on the bilateral and international agenda openly and frankly."

"I am certain that together we could truly give Russian-American relations a new quality, and also do much to ensure security and stability on the world stage," Putin wrote.
Ahead of the G7 summit, Trump also spoke with Volodymyr Zelenskyy on how to bring the war to an end. "I wished President Trump every success, first and foremost in his efforts to end Russia’s war against Ukraine," Zelenskyy wrote on Telegram.
Russia's war in Ukraine has continued for more than four years since an invasion into the country in February 2022 - with the duration exceeding that of the the first world war, which lasted 1,566 days.

Efforts to secure peace have largely been on pause as the war in Iran continues, but US officials expressed a need to end the fighting "as quickly as possible", according to one senior official who briefed journalist on the G7 meeting scheduled to take place this week.
