LANSING, Mich. (Michigan News Source) – Early voting gets underway for Michigan’s primary election today.

Under a state constitutional amendment approved by voters in 2022, registered voters can cast their ballots at designated early voting sites from July 25 through Aug. 2. Voters can still choose instead to vote on Election Day at their assigned polling locations or with an absentee ballot. Polls are open on Election Day from 7 a.m. until 8 p.m. statewide.

Early voting is not available at every polling location, so voters can check where they can cast their ballot by visiting the Michigan Voter Information Center website.

A primary election is designed to narrow the field of candidates within each political party. The winners advance to face their opponents in the November general election. That means voters cannot “split” their ballot in the primary. They must vote for candidates from either the Democratic or Republican Party. However, nonpartisan races and local proposals, such as millages, appear on both party ballots.

Voters will not see candidates for secretary of state or attorney general on the primary ballot. Those nominees were selected at the Republican and Democratic state conventions last spring and will appear on the November ballot.
