Have 100 Planned Parenthoods closed since the Dobbs decision? | Live Action

Planned Parenthood president Alexis McGill Johnson recently testified that 100 Planned Parenthood facilities have closed "since the Dobbs decision" with "more than 20 of those health centers" closing since the Big Beautiful Bill (BBB), which defunded Planned Parenthood of federal Medicaid dollars, was passed last year.

Planned Parenthood's president Alexis McGill-Johnson noted that this leaves Planned Parenthood with a remaining 550 brick and mortar facilities.

But is this factually accurate?

  • Planned Parenthood president Alexis McGill Johnson recently testified that Planned Parenthood now has 550 brick and mortar facilities, claiming 100 closed since Dobbs, and 20 of those since the Medicaid defunding of abortion providers nearly one year ago. But based on published claims, it is more likely that these 100 closures occurred between 2015 and 2026, not since Dobbs in 2022.

  • Even now, as Planned Parenthood shutters brick-and-mortar facilities, it increasingly relies upon telehealth — including mail-order abortion pills. Its “Virtual Health Centers (VHCs)” across the country are part of a larger restructuring plan it put in place years ago.

  • In 2025, while Planned Parenthood averaged 600 facilities, "serving" slightly more than 2M clients, FQHCs far outnumbered them.

  • Planned Parenthood is an abortion corporation, ending the lives of over 1,190 preborn babies every single day while receiving nearly $2.3M each day from American taxpayers. The corporation continues to be largely kept afloat by taxpayer funds. If politicians fail to act, within days, it will regain access to millions in federal Medicaid dollars.

  • The Testimony:100 centers closed

In a panel organized by Senator Patty Murray and other pro-abortion politicians this past week, Planned Parenthood president Alexis McGill-Johnson described the "consequences" of Dobbs and the defunding of abortion providers as "devastating," by floating these numbers:

"Planned Parenthood is the nation's leading provider of sexual and reproductive health care. Every year over 2 million patients rely on around 550 Planned Parenthood health centers for affordable birth control, cancer screenings, wellness exams, STI testing and treatment, and abortion, which we proudly serve - where legal.

...Since the Dobbs decision, more than 100 Planned Parenthood health centers have closed across 18 states. More than 20 of those health centers have closed since defund."

Planned Parenthood continues to use its marketing clout to deceive the public by shifting the focus away from its changing business model (intentionally downsizing brick and mortar centers in favor of expanding telehealth or Virtual Health Canters), to enhance profits. The move, largely enacted to thwart a cashflow problem, was planned long before the defunding measure was passed.

Even now, as Planned Parenthood shutters brick-and-mortar facilities, it increasingly relies upon telehealth — including mail-order abortion pills. Its “Virtual Health Centers (VHCs)” across the country are part of a larger restructuring plan it put in place years ago.

    The Facts:Closed Health Centers

"More than 100 Planned Parenthood health centers have closed across 18 states. More than 20 of those health centers have closed since defund," claimed McGill Johnson.

FACTS: Today in 2026, Planned Parenthood's website still claims it operates 600 facilities nationwide; it claimed to operate 600 facilities in 2025, as well, and Planned Parenthood has repeatedly used this number every year since 2017 (as seen in its annual report) prior to both the 2022 Dobbs decision and the 2025 defund measure.

Over 600 facilities recorded by Planned Parenthood in 2017

In its 2015 annual report, Planned Parenthood wrote: "In 2015, nearly 650 Planned Parenthood health centers served 2.4 million women, men, and young people."

Based on these published claims, 100 Planned Parenthood facilities have closed, it is more likely that it occurred between 2015 and 2026, not since Dobbs in 2022.

    Contraceptives

"Last November, visits for birth control were down by 20% compared to the same period the previous year," claimed McGill-Johnson.

FACTS: In 2023, the Food and Drug Administration approved the Opill contraceptive for over-the-counter dispensing. And, just prior to the defund, contraceptives as a service at Planned Parenthood had already decreased over 43% (from just over 4M) in 2009.

    STI Testing

McGill Johnson stated that STI testing "declined by 11%."

FACT: These services at Planned Parenthood have been down over 43% since 2009.

    Breast Exam Visits

McGill Johnson claimed, "In December, breast exam visits declined by 25%."

FACTS: PP's 2024-2025 annual report, published before defunding was enacted, revealed that breast screenings had already dropped over 15% from the previous year and had plummeted over 85% from 2000.

    The Reality:

Planned Parenthood believes that the "crisis" caused by the defund and Dobbs resulted in "cancers go[ing] undetected and STIs go[ing] untreated." However, as Live Action News previously detailed, Federally Qualified Health Centers (FQHC), which do not commit abortion, should be funded instead of Planned Parenthood.

In 2025, while Planned Parenthood averaged 600 facilities, "serving" slightly more than 2M clients, FQHCs far outnumbered them.

"Nationwide, nearly 1,400 Health Center Program grantees operated at more than 16,000 sites, providing affordable primary and preventive care on a sliding fee scale to more than 32.4 million patients," claimed the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) website.

Service data for 2025 is not available yet, however comparing FQHC data to Planned Parenthood we find that in 2024:

  • FQHCs performed nearly 13 times (12.61) more Pap tests than Planned Parenthood.

  • Overall cancer screenings (breast and Pap) at FQHCs outnumbered Planned Parenthood centers nearly 10 to 1.

  • FQHCs provided nearly five times more HIV testing than Planned Parenthood.

  • FQHCs provided more than 87 times the number of prenatal care services as Planned Parenthood.

  • Why It Matters:

Planned Parenthood is a corrupt organization which has built a billion-dollar empire using American taxpayer dollars, frequently endangering the health of the women and children it claims to serve — by killing preborn children in the womb and, more recently, grooming born children to reject the biological reality of their sex.

From 2024-25, before the BBB took effect, a record breaking $832 million was funneled to Planned Parenthood from taxpayers’ pockets while it killed more than 434,000 preborn children – a record number on both counts.

During that same "killer year," Planned Parenthood’s own reports showed plummeting health care services, like cancer screenings and well woman exams, among other actual health services, all while reporting net assets of more than $3.1 billion.

McGill-Johnson admitted that "bans do not stop abortions," which is likely why Planned Parenthood is prescribing the abortion pill "Just in Case" or without a confirmed pregnancy, in violation of the FDA's REMS safety regulations.

    The Background:

June 2024: Dobbs v Jackson Women's Health Organization overturned the infamous Roe v. Wade Supreme Court decision, which had a pro-death strangle hold on states since 1973.

In Dobbs, the ruling held that:

The Constitution does not confer a right to abortion; Roe and Casey are overruled; and the authority to regulate abortion is returned to the people and their elected representatives.

Dobbs enabled states to enforce pro-life laws already on the books (previously overruled under Roe) or to pass new protective measures. While pro-life states were protecting life, pro-abortion states were passing laws to "shield" providers who knowingly violate those laws.

July 2025: President Trump signed into law the "Big Beautiful Bill (BBB)," removing Medicaid funds from Planned Parenthood and other abortion providers — unfortunately, for just one year.

However, the bill went through numerous court battles before it finally went into effect, and at the time, Planned Parenthood announced that nearly 200 of their facilities would be “at risk of closure.”

September 2025: PP claimed that 50 of its centers had been "forced to close.”

June 2026: the pro-abortion group KFF.org had claimed Planned Parenthood closed 57 facilities across 20 states since January 2025. Then Alexis McGill-Johnson claimed that 100 centers have closed since Dobbs, including 20 due to the defund measure.

July 2026: The Medicaid defunding measure is set to expire if politicians fail to extend it or make it permanent. If the defunding measure is extended Planned Parenthood is already predicting it will result in "as many as 150 more Planned Parenthood" facilities which "could shut down."

    The Bottom Line:

In her discussion, Alexis McGill-Johnson credited the "anti-abortion movement" with defunding Planned Parenthood and making it harder to "get an abortion":

"This week marks four years since the Dobbs decision. It also marks nearly one year since President Trump and Republicans in Congress defunded Planned Parenthood by aiming to block Medicaid patients from using their insurance at Planned Parenthood health centers.

These things did not happen by accident. They are a part of the anti-abortion movement's coordinated decades-long plan to make it harder for everyone - everywhere - to get an abortion."

Planned Parenthood is an abortion corporation, ending the lives of over 1,190 preborn babies every single day while receiving nearly $2.3M each day from American taxpayers. The corporation continues to be largely kept afloat by taxpayer funds. If politicians fail to act, within days, it will regain access to millions in federal Medicaid dollars.
