An Israeli drone strike caused a fire at the South Pars gas field in Iran's southern Bushehr region on Saturday, Iranian media said amid reported Israeli strikes in the area.

Iranian state media Fars said that the gas field, Iran's largest natural gas production facility, was hit by a "small aircraft resembling a drone," citing local witnesses.

Gas production has been suspended from part of Iran's South Pars field following an Israeli attack on the site on Saturday, the semi-official Tasnim news agency reported.

"Due to a fire in one of the four units of Phase 14 of South Pars, the production of 12 million cubic meters of gas from the Phase 14 platform has been temporarily halted until this section of the refinery is brought back into operation," Tasnim said.

The strike had resulted in a fire, which the Iranian oil ministry said was later extinguished.

The giant South Pars field, located in the southern Bushehr province, is one of Iran's two main hydrocarbon production facilities.

IDF also reportedly strikes Abadan oil refinery

Piles of smoke were also seen on Saturday in Iran's oil refinery in Abadan, off the coast of the Persian Gulf, amid reported strikes by the IDF.

Iran produces around 275 billion cubic meters (bcm) of gas per year or some 6.5% of global gas output, and consumes it domestically as it cannot export gas due to sanctions.

Iran shares the field with Qatar, which calls the field North Field. Qatar produces 77 million tonnes of liquefied gas from the field with the help of global majors such as Exxon and Shell and supplies the gas to Europe and Asia.

This is a developing story.
