Christmas celebrations highlight unity and coexistence in Baghdad - Iraqi News

Baghdad (IraqiNews.com) – Amid an atmosphere filled with faith and shared values, members of Iraq’s Christian community marked the birth of Jesus Christ in Baghdad, reaffirming messages of love, humility, and peaceful coexistence. A solemn mass was held at the Church of the Transition of the Virgin Mary in the Mansour district, drawing large crowds alongside official and civil figures in a vivid display of national unity.
Speaking to the Iraqi News Agency, Father Madin Shamil, pastor of the Church of the Transition of the Virgin Mary, emphasized the spiritual meaning of the occasion. He congratulated believers in Iraq and around the world, expressing hope that Christmas would be “a feast of love and peace in hearts.” He added that the birth of Christ in a humble place carries a lasting lesson, noting that it teaches humanity “simplicity and humility.”
Father Shamil also explained the symbolism of the Christmas tree inside the church, saying it represents life, while the star placed on top recalls the sign that guided people to the birth of Jesus. He praised the spirit of solidarity in Iraqi society, highlighting that Muslims and Sabeans are often among the first to share in Christian celebrations.
On the security front, a delegation from the Ministry of Interior visited the church to extend greetings. Karkh Police Commander Major General Adnan Hassan Hamad said the visit carried a message of reassurance, stressing that security forces are fully prepared to maintain stability. He described Christians as “our family,” underscoring that Baghdad remains safe and secure thanks to ongoing security efforts.
Civil society organizations also took part, reinforcing messages of coexistence. Ali Mushtet, head of the “We Are All Iraq” organization, said such participation has continued for more than a decade, reflecting pride in shared citizenship. Families attending the celebrations expressed joy at the festive atmosphere returning to Baghdad’s streets and churches, echoing hopes for peace and prosperity for all Iraqis.
