The UK Will Lead an Effort to Build Long Range Missiles
Britain will lead a European project to build a long-range missile capable of ending Nato’s reliance on US weapons, The Telegraph revealed. The Coalition will create precision strike weapons to help plug gaps left by Trump’s withdrawal of US forces.
The alliance is still reeling from Donald Trump’s decision not to deploy Tomahawk cruise missiles on the continent. Now it has decided to take matters into its own hands.
Britain is not breaking with NATO, but it is leading efforts to build a stronger “European pillar” within the alliance to reduce operational reliance on the United States.
This strategic shift is taking shape through the following developments:
The UK, alongside Germany, France, the Netherlands, and Ukraine, is developing advanced, homegrown long-range missiles to plug gaps in European defense.
The European drive for “strategic autonomy” follows increased friction with the U.S. and shifts in American defense priorities, pushing European allies to take more direct responsibility for the continent’s security.
To solidify this leadership, the UK has accelerated its military budget, moving to expand capabilities and ensure European members can effectively deter regional threats.
Despite concerns over funding trajectories and shifting U.S. stances, these initiatives are designed to operate in tandem with NATO rather than replace the alliance.
The long-term goal is to make the UK and Europe better equipped to protect themselves and Ukraine without depending entirely on Washington.
Europe would not allow the US to use their joint bases or air space during the Iran war and, as a consequence, the US has pulled back from helping Europe.
European defense was non-existent in most countries. They have let the US fund their defense.
