Three new countries warned to brace for tsunami waves after earthquake

www.dailymail.co.uk

Millions were under tsunami advisories today after one of the strongest earthquakes ever recorded struck Russia, sending tsunami waves into Japan, Hawaii and the US west coast.

Authorities warned the risk from the 8.8 magnitude quake could last for hours, and millions of people potentially in the path of the waves were initially told to move away from the shore or seek high ground.

Several people were injured, but none gravely, and no major damage has been reported so far.

The worst appeared to have passed for many areas, including the US, where all tsunami warnings were lifted by noon EST.

But in countries along the Pacific - such as Ecuador, Chile and New Zealand - new warnings were forcing evacuations.

Wednesday's earthquake was the sixth most powerful on record, and the strongest in Kamchatka region since 1952, with aftershocks of up to 7.5 magnitude expected.

It is the largest earthquake globally since 2011, when a 9.1 megaquake hit northeast Japan and left 19,747 people either dead or missing.

This is a developing story. Follow Daily Mail's live coverage below.

Fears of a devastating tsunami faded Wednesday for the U.S. and Japan after one of the strongest quakes ever recorded struck off a sparsely populated Russian peninsula, but new alerts along South America’s Pacific coast forced evacuations and closed beaches.

Chile, a place highly vulnerable to earthquakes and subsequent tsunamis, raised its warning to the highest level early Wednesday for most of its lengthy Pacific coast and said it was evacuating hundreds of people.

Meanwhile education officials in Ecuador canceled classes at schools in the Galapagos Islands as well as communities along the coast, with the Galapagos Islands on high alert.

Ecuadorian officials said a tsunami watch remains in effect.

'Currently, there are slight disturbances in sea level, which could continue for the next few hours,' said INOCAR, the Ecuadorean Navy’s Oceanographic Institute.

In New Zealand, tsumani waves began hitting on Thursday morning local time, with officials warning that 'strong and unusual currents and unpredictable surges at the shore'.

'Tsunami activity has already reached parts of New Zealand,' the advisory read.

'The first currents and surges are unlikely to be the largest and are expected to continue over many hours. The threat must be regarded as real until this Advisory is cancelled.'

New Zealand is about 6,000 miles from the quake’s epicenter. Officials warn that the first tsunami waves might not be the largest to arrive and people should treat the threat as real until the alert is canceled.

Chile, a place highly vulnerable to earthquakes and subsequent tsunamis, raised its warning to the highest level for most of its lengthy Pacific coast and said it was evacuating hundreds of people.

Officials said they are evacuating five prisons due to their locations and elevations.

Interior Minister Álvaro Elizalde told CNN the inmates will be transferred 'to other prison facilities, geographically close, with all security protocols in place'.

Chile ranks among the countries that are most vulnerable to earthquakes and subsequent tsunamis, and Chileans have painful memories of an 8.8-magnitude quake in 2010 that killed 525 people, many of them in the tsunami that followed.

Advisory canceled in Hawaii

The tsunami advisories are now lifted in all of Hawaii.

'Tsunami wave heights across the state of Hawaii are now below advisory levels and are continuing to diminish,' the to the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said.

'Small sea level changes and strong or unusual currents may persist for several additional hours in some coastal areas.'

Tsunami waves hit New Zealand

Emergency management officials say coastlines of New Zealand are experiencing strong currents and wave surges as tsunami activity reaches shores.

It’s early morning Thursday in New Zealand. An alert broadcast to every cell phone says the threat is likely to remain in place until at least midday. Evacuations haven’t been ordered. But people throughout the South Pacific island nation are warned to stay out of the water and away from beaches, shorelines, harbors, rivers and estuaries.

New Zealand is about 6,000 miles from the quake’s epicenter. Officials warn that the first tsunami waves might not be the largest to arrive and people should treat the threat as real until the alert is canceled.

The island of Baltra has already seen waves of more than 3 feet, according to the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center.

In some areas, waves have hit 4 feet.

Alaska 'didn't feel a thing'

A spokesperson for Alaska’s state emergency management agency, Jeremy Zidek, says in a text that no damage has been reported.

The community of Adak recorded the largest tsunami wave in Alaska at 2.7 feet, or less than a meter.

'I think what really surprised us, given the magnitude of that earthquake on Kamchatka, is that we didn’t feel a thing,' Adak City Manager Breck Craig said.

'The bad thing is, that it might be our turn next.'

All of the counties that were ordered to evacuate in Hawaii have been given an all clear for residents to return, per the state’s Department of Transportation.

All airports have resumed operations and ports have been cleared.

Russian earthquake struck on 'megathrust fault'

The 8.8 earthquake off Russia that triggered tsunami warnings across thre Pacific occurred on what is known as a 'megathrust fault,' where the denser Pacific Plate is sliding underneath the lighter North American Plate, scientists said.

With its epicentre near the city of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, it was the biggest earthquake since the devastating Tohuku event in 2011, which caused a tsunami that sent Japan's Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant into meltdown.

'The Kamchatka seismic zone is one of the most active subduction zones around the Pacific Ring of Fire, and the Pacific Plate is moving westwards at around 3 inches per year,' said Roger Musson, honorary research fellow at the British Geological Survey.

Earthquake triggered at least 10 aftershocks

Wednesday's quake has already triggered at least 10 aftershocks above magnitude 5, and they could continue for months, said Caroline Orchiston, director of the Centre for Sustainability at the University of Otago in New Zealand.

'This demonstrates that large-magnitude earthquakes generate aftershock sequences that start immediately, and some of these can be damaging in their own right,' she said.

The 8.8 magnitude event on Wednesday came less than two weeks after a magnitude 7.4 earthquake in the same area, which has now been identified as a 'foreshock.'

'Earthquakes by their nature are unpredictable,' said Pascal. 'There are no precursors that are scientifically consistent in earthquake sequences. Before this morning, those other ones were the main shocks.'

Bigger aftershocks cannot entirely be ruled out, he added, but their magnitude and frequency normally tend to decrease over time.

What is a tsunami?

According to ready.gov, a tsunami 'is a series of enormous ocean waves caused by earthquakes, underwater landslides, volcanic eruptions or asteroids.'

The speed of tsunami waves depends on ocean depth rather than the distance from the source of the wave, according to the National Ocean Service.

The waves can travel as as fast as jet planes over deep waters, only slowing down when reaching shallow waters.

Ecuadorian officials said, 'there is a high probability of a tsunami being generated' on the nation's coastline.

They also warned that waves could reach more than 10 feet.

Parts of Costa Rica and Panama could also see tsunami waves of about three to 10 feet, per the National Weather Service.

The earthquake appeared to be the strongest recorded since the 9.0 magnitude earthquake off northeastern Japan in March 2011 which caused a massive tsunami and set off meltdowns at a nuclear power plant.

The International Atomic Energy Agency said initial reports showed Japan’s nuclear plants were not affected Wednesday.

Only a few other stronger quakes have ever been measured around the world. Wednesday’s occurred along the Pacific 'Ring of Fire', a series of seismic faults around the Pacific Ocean where most of the world’s earthquakes take place.

The quake struck at 11:24 a.m. in Kamchatka with a magnitude of 8.8 and a depth of about 13 miles, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. It was centered offshore, about 75 miles from Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, Kamchatka’s regional capital.

Multiple aftershocks as strong as 6.9 magnitude followed.

Hundreds of flights delayed or cancelled after earthquake

Hundreds of flights to and from China were delayed or cancelled on Wednesday, per FlightAware.

In the US mainland, flight disruptions in the west coast remained minimal, with 58 flights to Los Angeles International Airport delayed, and 11 canceled.

Bay Area officials tell residents to remain cautious

Officials in the Bay Area told residents to remain on alert as the area continues seeing water fluctuations on the coast.

While the tsunami alert was downgraded to an advisory, officials said people in northern California should still stay away from the coast.

All tsunami warnings lifted in US west coast

The portion of northern California that remained under a tsunami warning - the highest alert level - has now been downgraded to a tsunami advisory.

Tsunami advisories are still in effect in regions of California, Oregon, Alaska and Haweaii.

An advisory means there is the potential for strong currents and dangerous waves, as well as flooding on beaches or in harbors.

A tsunami height of 10 to 13 feet was recorded in Kamchatka, and waves of 2 feetwere recorded on Japan’s northern island of Hokkaido. In Northern California, officials recorded waves of 3.6 feet in Crescent City.

No tsunami warnings in effect in the US

Officials in Crescent City, the last portion of the US coastline that remained under tsunami warning, said on Wednesday the area has not seen major damage so far.

'It was a long night for all of us,' said Eric Weir, the city manager.

'We were fortunate this time. There was significant tsunami surges. We’re still dealing with those now, but it did stay within the banks of Elk Creek.'

According to Japan’s Meteorological Agency, a tsunami warning is when the tsunami height is expected to be up to 3 meters.

Under a tsunami warning, waves are expected cause damage to low-lying areas, flood buildings and expose people to tsunami currents. People are advised to evacuate from coastal or river areas immediately to safer places such as high ground or a tsunami evacuation building.

A tsunami advisory is when tsunami height is expected to be up to 1 meter.

It warns those exposed would be caught in strong tsunami currents in the sea, and that small vessels may capsize. Under an tsunami advisory, people are advised to get out of the water and leave coastal areas immediately.

Eurasia's largest volcano erupts in Russia after massive earthquake: 'A descent of burning lava'

The Klyuchevskoy volcano in Kamchatka erupted on Wednesday after the earthquake in Kamchatka, Russia.

Images shared online show the glow of the explosion and lava descending from the volcano.

In a statement posted on Telegram, the Russian Academy of Sciences' United Geophysical Service said: 'A descent of burning hot lava is observed on the western slope. Powerful glow above the volcano, explosions.'

The volcano is located on the Kamchatka peninsula in Russia's Far East. It has erupted several times in recent years.

Located around 280 miles north of the regional capital, Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, Klyuchevskoy is one of the highest volcanoes in the world.

The Klyuchevskaya Sopka stands at 15,584 feet in the east of Russia’s Kamchatka region. Observers heard explosions and saw streams of lava on the volcano’s western slopes, the Kamchatka branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences’ geophysical service said.

Scientists have anticipated the eruption for some time, with the volcano’s crater filling with lava for several weeks and the mountain spitting out plumes of ash. Sometimes described as the 'land of fire and ice,' Kamchatka is one of the most active volcanic regions in the world. It has about 300 volcanoes, 29 of them still active, according to NASA Earth Observatory.

Terrifying warning from Hawaiian authorities: 'All shores are at risk no matter which direction they face'

Hawaiian authorities have issued a chilling explainer ahead of an approaching tsunami.

'A tsunami is a series of long ocean waves. Each individual wave crest can last 5 to 15 minutes or more and extensively flood coastal areas.

'The danger can continue for many hours after the initial wave as subsequent waves arrive. Tsunami wave heights cannot be predicted and the first wave may not be the largest.

'Tsunami waves efficiently wrap around islands. All shores are at risk no matter which direction they face.

'The trough of a tsunami wave may temporarily expose the seafloor but the area will quickly flood again.

Extremely strong and unusual nearshore currents can accompany a tsunami. Debris picked up and carried by a tsunami amplifies its destructive power.

'Simultaneous high tides or high surf can significantly increase the tsunami hazard.'

California issues Tsunami Watch warning

Authorities in California are currently evaluating the threat, but have warned a tsunami could arrive as early as 12.15am local time.
