Police Department Selling Forgotten 1970 Chevy Cruiser With Just 18K Miles
While it doesn't run, the classic SUV has only been driven 18,122 miles

by Michael Gauthier
- Morton Police Department is auctioning off a 1970 Suburban.
- The SUV was rarely used and has less than 20,000 miles on it.
- Bidding is already up to $11,200 with more than three days left.
Police car auctions barely elicit a shrug as no one’s particularly interested in a used Chevrolet Tahoe PPV or a Ford Police Interceptor Utility. However, Illinois’ Morton Police Department has something much cooler up for grabs.

In this case, it’s a 1970 Chevrolet Suburban that feels like it would be right at home on Dark Winds. Sporting a two-tone exterior, the “three-door” SUV features a minimalist police livery as well as rotating “bubble gum” lights on top.

The model appears to be in relatively good condition, which isn’t too surprising as it was stored indoors and only driven 18,122 miles (29,165 km). That being said, there’s plenty of rust and dirt as well as some wear and tear.
The interior is pretty basic as there isn’t much besides a bench seat, climate controls, and switches for the lights and siren. They’re joined by carpeting and rubber floor liners.

There’s no word on why the department barely used the Suburban, but it features a 5.7-liter V8 engine with a four barrel carburetor. It’s connected to an automatic transmission, which sends power to the rear wheels.
Unsurprisingly, the vehicle doesn’t run and the last time it started was roughly eight years ago. That’s not good, but the department said the vehicle “would make a pretty awesome ride for someone to restore or keep as is.”
As of this writing, bidding is up to $11,200 and the reserve has already been met. The auction closes in just under four days, so anyone with a soft spot for classic police hardware might want to get in while the siren’s still calling.
