Jerry Jones Explanation for Obscene Gesture is Wild

In a dominant Week 5 NFL matchup, the Dallas Cowboys defeated the New York Jets 37-22 and improved their record to 2-2-1 on the year. And while the win came at the expense of a very bad team, Cowboys fans and ownership were feeling pretty good about themselves.
How good were they feeling?
Moments after the final whistle, Cowboys owner Jerry Jones celebrated by pointing towards a Jets fan seated below his suite and extending his middle finger.
That’s right. An 82-year-old man flipped the bird to a fan of the opposing team. Allegedly.
The clip quickly went viral on social media, with fans having a mixed reaction to the playful taunt. But Jones insists the controversy is all for naught.

While the assumption has been that Jerry was delivering a middle finger taunt to Jets fans as a way to rub his team’s victory in their face, Jones insists it was … an accident.
Jones clarified on Tuesday during an appearance on 105.3 The Fan that the gesture was inadvertent, intended as a thumbs-up to celebrate with enthusiastic Cowboys fans swarming below his box after the final touchdown.
“That was unfortunate,” Jones said. “That was kind of an exchange with our fans out in front of us. There was a swarm of Cowboys fans out front. Not Jet fans, Cowboys fans. The entire stadium was brimming with the enthusiasm of Cowboys, certainly late in the game.”
“That was inadvertent on my part. It was right after we made our last touchdown. We were all excited about it, there wasn’t an antagonistic issue or anything like that. I put up the wrong show of hand,” he insisted.
“I’m not kidding. If you want to call it accidental, you can call it accidental. It got straightened around pretty quick, but the intention was thumbs up and pointing at our fans because everyone was jumping up and down excited.”

Facing disciplineOf course! Because who among us hasn’t tried to give the thumbs-up sign to someone and accidentally flipped them the bird? It makes perfect sense.
Or maybe, just maybe, Jerry Jones is trying to squirm his way out of a fine.
“In 2009, the league fined the late Bud Adams $250,000 for shooting the double bird from his suite in a game against the Bills,” Pro Football Talk writes.
“We’ll see if the league does anything. And, if the league does, we’ll see if Jerry cares.”
It’s not like Jones hasn’t had to deal with obnoxious fans before and somehow avoided shooting them the middle finger. Last season, Philadelphia Eagles fans were caught mocking the Cowboys’ owner when he came to town.
“Jerry, you’re doing a great job this year, man. Keep it going,” one fan sarcastically yelled. “Great job. Keep doing what you’re doing, Jerry. We love you in Philly.”
We bet they do. But still, no birds fired.
