Chiefs Coach Picks a Fight With Trump and Nobody Knows Why
Kansas City Chiefs special teams coordinator Dave Toub sharply criticized President Trump’s negative comments about the NFL’s new dynamic kickoff rule.
Why is anybody’s guess.
No, look, we get it. Trump’s not a big fan of the kickoff rules, which have turned what was once a crucial play that could swing momentum in a game into an afterthought. And, being a special teams guy, Toub would like to explain why it’s not all that bad.
But he didn’t do that. Instead, he literally went attention-seeking and tried to pick a fight.
“He doesn’t even know what he’s looking at,” Toub scoffed, even though we can all see that it’s a garbage play. “He has no idea what’s going on with the kickoff rule. Take that for what it’s worth. And I hope he hears it.”

Good for you, brother. Stand up for what you believe in. Granted, you look like a little kid shouting “look at me, look at me!” to his unattentive parents, but hey, do what you gotta do.
The Chiefs coach was responding to Trump’s criticism of the unwatchable NFL kickoffs. He’s been railing against it the entire season. For whatever reason, Toub, as his team is on the verge of an embarrassing playoff miss despite being on a so-called “revenge” tour, felt this was a topic worth addressing.
“I think it’s so terrible. I think it’s so demeaning, and I think it hurts the game. It hurts the pageantry,” Trump said on ESPN last week. “I’ve told that to Roger Goodell, and I don’t think it’s any safer. I mean, you still have guys crashing into each other.”

Back in September, Trump was a little more blunt with his criticism of the kickoff rule.
“The ball is moving, and the players are not, the exact opposite of what football is all about,” the President grumbled. “‘Sissy’ football is bad for America, and bad for the NFL! Who comes up with these ridiculous ideas?”

Trump is rightWell, to answer the President’s question: Goodell. Goodell comes up with these ridiculous ideas. It’s been so bad in recent years that you might as well eliminate the kickoff altogether and have each team start on the 35.
Better yet, drop it at the one-yard line and bring safeties into play. Imagine that – teams rushing or blitzing in the hopes of immediately getting two points, while simultaneously making their secondary vulnerable to a big play right off the bat.
Unfortunately, the kickoff without the returns is here to stay for now.
The question really is, why is Toub trying to pick a fight with the President of the United States, who has said good things about his team, when the Chiefs’ season hangs in the balance?
Get your priorities straight, man. And I hope you hear it, Coach.
