Carney and Trump as the Odd Couple

Canadian prime minister, Mark Carney, recently found himself embroiled in a diplomatic tiff with Trump. Both Carney and Trump have a form of Tourette’s that I recognize all too well. When asked about the forest fires in Ontario, Mark didn’t hesitate in implicating Trump as the climate arsonist. Trump shot back that Mark would not be receiving his tariff deposit back for violating our smoke-free policy.

This dust-up made the news, but the press failed to provide any context for understanding Carney’s defensive attitude. It might help if I told you that Carney, throughout his career as a central banker, has been a huge proponent of the “E” in ESG, second only to BlackRock’s Larry Fink. In his prior central banking roles as governor of the Bank of Canada and Bank of England, he instituted a policy molesting corporations with burdensome ESG reporting. While Fink has since seen the error of his ways, distancing himself from his ESG-loving days, Carney is like Fink’s backwoods cousin who has yet to realize that sex with one’s sister is bad. He continues in blissful ignorance with fostering the foul practice of ESG.

Another thing about Carney is that he checks all the boxes required of the progressive, permissive order. He has a daughter with they/them pronouns, and unconditionally accepts her transgenderism. They/Them has mastered well the lingo of the Yale gender studies department in posting on Facebook the following jewel in 2019:

Yale is an institution which has promoted and legitimized eugenics, global warfare, genocidal policies, the racialized carceral state, and the hyper-privileging of white voices in academia. In the face of this, it is crucial that we invest time, energy, thought, resources, and love into ethnicity, race, and migration studies, which looks at the world, and Yale itself, through a critical anti-racist and anticolonial lens.

I am not sure that Trump knew this fact about Carney’s daughter, but if he did, it would not have mattered. In Trump’s Oval Office meeting with Carney on October 7, 2025, during an extended press exchange—primarily about trade, tariffs and Canada-U.S. relations—Trump shifted into criticism of the previous Democrat administration. He said it had been destroying our country through, “Open borders and men playing in women’s sports and transgender from everybody, and windmills all over the place.”

He went on to state that if those policies had continued for another few years, the United States might no longer have remained a viable country.

It is natural that Carney and Trump would rattle each other’s nerves, but Trump has done the same to many, otherwise, apolitical Canadians with his imposition of tariffs. Being a free market absolutist, I am no fan of tariffs, but I also get a perverse delight in pulling Canadians’ chain after they have displayed so much sanctimonious disdain for American culture as vulgar and militant while they cling to the U.S. economically, culturally, and geographically, like an infant to a mother’s teat.

I will sum up the present relationship between Trump and Carney as being the Odd Couple with Trump as Oscar and Carney as Felix, living in the same New York apartment.
