Trump: Cuban Leader Could Get Maduro Treatment

Cuba’s leadership could get the Maduro treatment at any time, President Trump has warned, saying his plans for regime change on the Caribbean island remain “flexible.”
President Trump issued the warning during a new interview with Axios.
Asked if an operation against Cuba could resemble the raid that captured Nicolas Maduro at the beginning of January, Trump said, “Possibly. It’s possible.”
“Operation Absolute Resolve” used special forces to breach Maduro’s compound in Caracas. The president and his wife were captured and brought back to the US.
President Trump said Secretary of State Marco Rubio is involved in the Cuba policy.
“Marco’s doing a great job,” Trump said.
“Marco’s parents—it’s such a great story—his parents were from Cuba.”
President Trump went on to discuss the Venezuela operation in some detail, saying it was less complex than the campaign against Iran, and that distance is an important factor in what happens with regard to Cuba.
“These places are close by. Whereas if you look at Iran, that’s a very long trip,” Trump said.
“I flew to that area a few times and unrelated to this, but you’re flying for 18 hours, you’re flying for a long time. Venezuela is relatively close, and Cuba is a hopscotch.”
President Trump added that a crucial difference between Venezuela and Cuba is oil—or Cuba’s lack of it.
“Cuba has nice property, and a nice shoreline.”
After Operation Absolute Resolve, which saw a pro-US leadership installed in Venezuela, shipments of oil to Cuba were restricted, plunging the island into an energy crisis that has seen widespread blackouts.
The Trump administration has also expanded sanctions against the regime and indicted former president Raul Castro on murder charges.
As well as a potential military operation, President Trump has suggested a “friendly takeover” of Cuba, with Secretary of State Marco Rubio playing an important role.
