CNN anchor Jake Tapper and Axios correspondent Alex Thompson are co-authoring a book examining former President Joe Biden’s alleged mental decline and the Democratic Party’s 2024 election defeat…conveniently failing to mention their respective outlets’ complicity in ignoring Biden’s frequent slip-ups.

Original Sin: President Biden’s Decline, Its Cover-up, and His Disastrous Choice to Run Again, is set to release on May 20. The book claims Biden’s decision to run for reelection was a significant mistake, leading to a campaign of “gaslighting and denial.” The authors argue that Biden and his aides were convinced he was the only one capable of defeating Donald Trump, leading them to misrepresent his condition to the public–his so-called “Original Sin.”

“What you will learn makes President Biden’s decision to run for reelection seem shockingly narcissistic, self-delusional, and reckless — a desperate bet that went bust — and part of a larger act of extended public deception that has few precedents,” the publisher, Penguin Press, said in a statement. The publisher also added that the former president, “his family, and his senior aides were so convinced that only he could beat Trump again, they lied to themselves, allies, and the public about his condition and limitations.”

The authors conducted interviews with over 200 insiders and highlight the media’s role in allegedly covering up Biden’s struggles. However, Tapper and Thompson appear to make no mention of their own roles in furthering that coverup.

Ahead of the 2020 election, Tapper downplayed concerns about Biden’s mental faculties by attributing his frequent verbal flubs to a stutter.

In 2023, Thompson defended Biden’s “quirky aphorisms” and “unique phrases” from Republican critics. “There are legitimate questions about Biden’s age and stamina as he runs for a second term — but his off-beat proverbs are just Biden being Biden.”

According to the book, despite Biden’s public assurances of his capability to serve another term, concerns about his fitness persisted, exacerbated by a poor debate performance against Donald Trump.

The book suggests that Biden’s decision to run was driven by self-interest and fear of another Trump presidency, which ultimately led to the Democratic Party’s downfall.
