Intricate Ears and God

Consider the tiny and insignificant Eustachian Tube: It is a vital tube that connects your inner ear with the back of your throat and nasal passage. While small, it has an important use. How many of us have found ourselves with an ear infection -- this tube becomes clogged, and we spend a lot of time blowing our noses, making funny sounds (see Felix Unger in the movie The Odd Couple) and otherwise doing everything we can to clear the tube and relieve the inner ear pressure. It is also vital to help us equalize the pressure in the inner ear as we change atmospheres, whether flying, mountain climbing or scuba diving.

The natural world has supernatural origins. Hoops need to be jumped through to deny this. Even in the ancient world, this was obvious - for did not Saint Paul write to the Romans: "Ever since the creation of the world, his invisible nature, namely, his eternal power and deity, has been clearly perceived in the things that have been made. So [the nonbelievers] are without excuse."

"Where is the proof?" someone will still demand. The response? Look around you.

The Fibonacci Sequence, a mathematical arrangement in which each number is the sum of the two numbers preceding (0, 1, 1, 2, 3, 5, 8…), appears in nature. It is the Golden Ratio, and it appears in leaves, branches, stems, pine cones, and honeybees. The distance between the Sun and the Earth is about 108 times the diameter of the Sun, and the distance between the Moon and the Earth is about 108 times the diameter of the Moon, making both bodies perfectly aligned to create a livable planet.

There is also proof within your own head.

The ear as a whole is divided into three parts: the outer, the middle, and the inner ear. The outer ear, with the lobules (lobes) and the helix, the antihelix, the eardrum and the ear canal captures and directs sound inward. The middle ear, with its three small bones, the malleus, the incus, and the stapes, transfers the sound captured by the outer ear into the fluid-filled inner ear, amplifying and concentrating the sound waves’ pressure.

In order for this to work, though, there needs to be the Eustachian Tube. The Eustachian Tube is the very tiny, very intricate, and very well-designed tube connecting the middle ear to the back of the nose and throat. It is primarily used to equalize air pressure within the eardrum. Infants have shorter and more horizontal tubes, so they’re more prone to infections.

This small part of our ear, measuring 1.5 inches long and 1/8 of an inch wide, is essential for mucus drainage and pressurization: Because air from the atmosphere flows from the outer ear, mouth and nose, air pressure, on both sides must be normalized and equal. Without this, your eardrum could not function properly.

Normally, this tube is closed, but it will open just slightly to let air through to prevent damage. If you’ve ever been on an airplane and felt your ears fill, or heard popping noises, you can thank your Eustachian Tube for taking the brunt of the pressure change.

How would evolution know that man would change his atmosphere? How, in the supposedly random way that life began and continued to survive on this rock in the void of space, could it simply be a happenstance? Many other mammals and vertebrates (such as frogs) have this or an equivalent pressurization part of their ears, proving that this was no mere fluke of human folly. It was designed this way for a purpose. If there were no tubes, we would be dizzy, in pain, and lose our ability to hear. If we had no tube, our eardrum would not be able to vibrate freely. If we had no tube, fluid would collect in our eardrum, infecting us. Is that all merely a coincidence?

It cannot be so. There is a designer for our ears, as there is for all things. That designer is God. The genius Einstein once said, “God does not shoot crap.”

We are "his workmanship," per the Psalmist. Just as the grand century-old cathedrals scattered through the world have an architect, so does our body, which, Saint Paul writes in his Letter to the Corinthians, is also a temple for the Holy Spirit. Just as an arrow cannot fire itself, or a stationary object move without an outside force (something with which Sir Isaac Newton would agree), so too a thing cannot bring itself into existence. Order cannot exist without an “Orderer,” ( stewardship and steward) and there can only be design or intentionality with a Designer.

To quote the Book of Proverbs: “The hearing ear and the seeing eye, the LORD has made them both.”

Dare we say, “Intelligent Design?”

Amen.
