Nobody Ever Gets Punished

We hear a lot about crime and malfeasance. We hear a lot less about punishment.
There was a story about President Eliot of Harvard. When asked what his primary task was, he answered nonchalantly, “To instill fear in the faculty.” While I did not fully appreciate his answer when I first heard it, I think that I am coming around to the former Ivy League president’s way of thinking.

Much of the news, if one still wants to follow the same, has to do with criminality. Whether it be the burgeoning theft of public funds in Minnesota or new data on apparent election fraud in 2020, we are constantly being presented with potential acts of illegality. And while I appreciate that it is far easier to accuse and condemn in the press than it is to build a solid case for a courtroom, there seem to be many people and organizations that simply slide through their criminal behavior, without any sign of being held accountable in the offing.

I am not a lawyer and never even played one on TV. I am sure that putting together an airtight case in any of the above subjects is not trivial. But one has to be very careful. Not punishing the guilty is like one-handed clapping. People look at public figures associated with potential wrongdoing and see them in their pools or on their private planes. The regular folks start to think that justice ends if you make over $500,000 a year. If there is no punishment or attempts at bringing indictments, the people will give up on the system. Additionally, Americans in the outer stratosphere of wealth or power will conclude in a Helmsley-like fashion that laws are only for the little people. Hilary ran her public business on a private, hackable server. If any lower official did the same, he would be making license plates in the local penitentiary. Fauci and friends misspelled words and did some of the country’s business on their Gmail accounts in order to avoid Freedom of Information Act searches. If they are not prosecuted, every crooked bureaucrat will do likewise.
I previously mentioned the book, “The One Hundred Year Marathon”, that describes China’s intensive efforts to steal, lie, misdirect, and destroy markets in order to overtake the US as the world’s biggest economic power. During the read, I came across the efforts of the World Bank, whose economists told the Chinese that they would help them develop a program that would keep the socialist aspects of the CCP intact while using subterfuge and mercantilism to push China over the U.S.. The World Bank’s main office is in Washington, D.C. The efforts of its economists to not push China towards great political openness with its economic growth led to the unemployment of millions of Americans and the drug death of thousands. The U.S. holds the largest voting percentage in the body. I would drop all support for this organization and throw them out of the country. The World Bank was supposed to use funds provided to China to help it develop economically while also encouraging an opening of Chinese society. Instead, it worked stealthily to ruin the US. Every “world organization” is organized to work against the U.S. and its interests. UNRWA was the civil branch of Hamas, the Palestinian branch of the Muslim Brotherhood. It is high time for the US to leave all such organizations, including the UN.

One does not have to win every case, but it’s important that cases be filed in the event of public malfeasance. The people have to believe that the system is impartial and public figures need to understand that there is a federal orange jumpsuit exactly their size. When punishment does not exist, then criminality grows and public belief in elections, voting, democracy and We the People tanks. If the system does not work, people will opt for a different system, and the transition will not be pleasant. It’s time to clean up the mess of the past decade. It’s a public obligation.
