"I support the Democrat in the race, sure!"

Former Vice President Kamala Harris has offered a weak endorsement of socialist candidate Zohran Mamdani when she appeared on Rachel Maddow's show. The signal to Mamdani comes after he got the endorsement from New York Governor Kathy Hochul but would not do the same for her.

She showed less-than-enthusiastic support for Mamdani when she was asked about it on the air. “Look, as far as I’m concerned, he’s the Democratic nominee, and he should be supported," Harris said. Maddow then pressed her further, asking if she would endorse the "rising star" in the Democrat Party running for New York City mayor.

"Do you endorse his candidacy?" Maddow asked.

"I support the Democrat in the race, sure!" Harris said, throwing her hands in the air while she replied to the question. She then quickly moved on to discuss other Democrats in other cities and argued that Mamdani is “not the only star" in Democrat politics.

“I know that [Mamdani’s] in New York, and I know New Yorkers think they’re the center of the world,” she said, playfully, “and here we are in New York having this interview.”

"But I mean, there are people like Barbara Drummond in Mobile, Alabama, Helena Moreno in New Orleans,” Harris added. “They’re all running for mayor too, and they are stars. So I hope that we don’t so over-index on New York City that we lose sight of the stars throughout our country, who are right now running for mayor and many other offices …. so, that’s where I am."

Mamdani has been leading in polls when facing up against multiple opponents. He was able to best former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo in the Democrat primary for the nomination. Cuomo, New York City Mayor Eric Adams, and Republican nominee Curtis Sliwa are now all running in the race against Mamdani.

There has been polling showing that if Mamdani were to only face Cuomo in the race, the former governor would be able to beat out the socialist candidate.
