🎯IMPACT: Federal funding cuts will increase pressure on sanctuary cities and states while sparking further debate over immigration policies.
On Tuesday, President Donald J. Trump told guests at The Detroit Economic Club that starting February 1, 2026, his administration will cease all federal payments to sanctuary cities and states. The move comes amid escalating pushback by Democrat-controlled state and local governments against the Trump administration’s deployment of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents across the country in a significant enforcement action.
“Starting February 1, we’re not making any payments to sanctuary cities or states having sanctuary cities because they do everything possible to protect criminals at the expense of American citizens,” President Trump said, continuing, “And it breeds fraud and crime and all the other problems that come. So we’re not making any payment to anybody that supports sanctuary.”
“We have also suspended payments tied to suspected scammers in Minnesota, of which there are many. It’s a great state. It was a great state. Now it’s getting destroyed by that stupid governor,” the President added.
A number of sanctuary cities and states have not only prohibited law enforcement resources from being used to assist federal immigration agents, but some have gone so far as to prohibit local police from responding and providing support to ICE and other federal officers when they come under assault by violent left-wing protestors. These actions have resulted in violent altercations like the one recently seen in Minneapolis, where an anti-ICE activist was fatally shot after attempting to run over a federal agent.
During the speech, President Trump also vowed that no more federal dollars would flow to childcare centers unless they can demonstrate children are actually in attendance, a response to the recent exposure of widespread social services fraud tied to Minnesota’s Somali immigrant community. In addition, Trump said his administration will move to denaturalize foreign-born Somali citizens if they were convicted of fraud, and the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) is ending its Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for Somali illegal immigrants.
