DCNF(DCNF)—MS NOW host Katy Tur praised Australia Monday after the country’s prime minister vowed to enact new gun control laws following a terrorist attack at Bondi Beach.

At least two gunmen opened fire on a Hanukkah celebration Sunday, killing at least 15 people and wounding 40, with a child and two police officers included among the victims. Tur also mentioned a double homicide at Brown University in Rhode Island, before ranting about mass shootings, particularly those at schools, before invoking Australia’s gun ban passed after a 1996 mass shooting.

“They’re trying to do something about it in Australia,” Tur claimed. “Again, on the issue of guns, it only took hours after two gunmen opened fire on and killed Jews celebrating Hanukkah at the beach for Prime Minister Anthony Albanese to promise reforms.”

Albanese vowed to enact further restrictions in response to the attack at Bondi Beach, according to The Associated Press. The new restrictions would include a limit on how many firearms a person could own, more review of gun licenses, limiting the licenses to Australian citizens and “additional use of criminal intelligence” to determine if a license to own a firearm should be granted.

“Politicians, they’re quickly realizing that the strict gun laws the country enacted after a mass murder back in 1996 needed updating. So why aren’t we addressing anything here? Why not here?” Tur asked at the end of the rant.

manhunt for the shooter responsible for the double homicide at Brown University entered its third day after the FBI held an initial person of interest before releasing him. Tur raged that change did not happen after a series of mass shootings at schools.

“There are probably going to be more people just like that as the years go on if we’re going on this track. The numbers of people who have experienced one school shooting or mass shooting are growing,” Tur claimed. “According to the Washington Post, roughly 400,000 kids have experienced gun violence since the 1999 murders at Columbine High School in Colorado, an event back then that was so shocking, it seemed impossible to happen again, or at least impossible that we as a country would let it happen again.”

“But it did happen again, and it was worse. Sandy Hook in Connecticut, Marjory Stoneman Douglas in Florida, Robb Elementary in Texas, Covenant in Nashville,” Tur continued.

Many Democrats have cited Australia’s sweeping gun ban following a 1996 mass shooting in Port Arthur, Tasmania, that killed 35 people and wounded 23 others as a model response to prevent mass shootings, specifically citing so-called “assault weapons.”
