DCNF(DCNF)—Republican Sen. Bill Cassidy has given America’s largest physician association two weeks to provide evidence it is complying with President Donald Trump’s Executive Order prohibiting the use of government funds to promote child sex-change interventions.

In a letter sent to the American Medical Association (AMA) on Sept. 23, which represents more than 270,000 members, Cassidy, chairman of the U.S. Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions (HELP), asks the AMA to provide evidence they have complied with President Trump’s Executive Order titled “Protecting Children From Chemical And Surgical Mutilation” by Oct. 7, 2025.

“Unfortunately, the AMA too often has been guided by ideological views in adopting policy resolutions, rather than doing what is right for doctors and patients,” wrote Dr. Cassidy in a press release. “AMA’s recent actions raise questions about whether it is actually prioritizing physicians and patients or simply advocating on its own political priorities.”

The AMA did not respond to the Daily Caller News Foundation’s request for comment.

In 2024, the AMA reaffirmed a policy stating it would “oppose laws and policies that criminalize, prohibit or otherwise impede the provision of evidence-based, gender affirming care, including laws and policies that penalize parents and guardians who support minors seeking and/or receiving gender-affirming care,” as noted in the letter. The letter also referenced the Daily Caller News Foundation’s recent report on the AMA Foundation’s LGBTQ medical fellowship program, which trains new doctors to promote and provide child sex-change medical interventions such as puberty blockers and cross-sex hormones.

Cassidy asked the AMA to provide the annual dollar amount of federal funding it receives and how this funding is being used.

“What amount of this funding is utilized for association member and/or health care provider outreach, education, or other initiatives related to gender transition services for minors, including the AMA Foundation’s LGBTQ medical fellowship program?” states the letter.

The AMA has received $15,815,180 in federal funding since 2020, according to the Department of Health and Human Services. The AMA previously told the DCNF these funds have gone towards initiatives meant to improve the U.S. public health infrastructure and workforce.

The letter also asks the AMA to provide evidence of actions it has taken to “ensure its members’ compliance” with President’s Trump’s EO banning child sex-changes and provide copies of its “guidance documents, guidelines for practice, and scientific literature” related to the provision of child sex-change medical interventions.

Cassidy has previously launched investigations into medical organizations promoting child sex-changes and called on the Endocrine Society, World Professional Association for Transgender Health and the American Academy of Pediatrics to “immediately stop the promotion of social affirmation, puberty blockers, cross-sex hormones, and surgeries for children and adolescents.”
