Howard Stern returned from summer vacation on Monday with a prank, duping listeners and news outlets with a bit suggesting he and SiriusXM had agreed to part ways.
Stern enlisted the help of comedian Andy Cohen on Monday, who took to the mic during his time slot on the channel and told listeners he was taking over for Stern with a new, fictional show titled “Andy 100.”
“This is not the voice you expected to hear or wanted to hear,” Cohen said as he opened the bit. “This is actually not how things were meant to go … Howard and the executive team at SiriusXM felt that it was bet to kind of part ways now. If you are listening, Howard, I do love you.”
Stern later came on the air and clarified he wasn’t going anywhere.
“Everything you’ve been reading in the paper about me or about Robyn is completely false,” the shock-jock said.
A number of news outlets, including the Associated Press, Variety and others, quickly published articles reporting Stern’s departure from SiriusXM before Stern got on the air to reveal the prank had been orchestrated.
The bit comes amid reports SiriusXM is considering not offering the 71-year-old pundit and comedian a new contract, rumors the radio host had not addressed until Monday.
Stern has been with the satellite radio provider for decades, and carries an audience of millions with each three times a week broadcast.
