Phoenix Suns trade Kevin Durant for former No. 2 overall pick
After months of trying to find a trade destination for future first-ballot Hall of Famer Kevin Durant, the Phoenix Suns have finally completed a deal.
According to ESPN’s NBA insider Shams Charania, the Suns have agreed to trade Durant to the Houston Rockets. In exchange for Durant, the Rockets are sending Jalen Green, Dillon Brooks, the 10th overall pick in the 2025 NBA Draft, and five second-round picks to Phoenix.
Durant, who has one year left on his contract at $54.7 million, is expected to sign a two-year, $122 million contract extension when he becomes eligible on July 6. His pending extension may have played a big role during the Suns’ trade negotiations, as teams may not have been willing to make a big offer without getting some sort of security that he’d be there for longer than just one season.
Either way, now the Suns have an interesting core of shooting guards with Devin Booker, Jalen Green, and Bradley Beal leading the charge. It’s possible another trade or two is coming in Phoenix.
Meanwhile, the Rockets feel they’ve built a strong enough core to now compete for an NBA championship. After winning 52 games last season, the Rockets clinched a playoff spot, but were bounced in the first round, losing a seven-game series to the Golden State Warriors.
