Graham Platner Echoes AOC, Mamdani: Billionaires 'Cheated' - Slay News

Democratic Senate candidate Graham Platner is facing fresh scrutiny after telling supporters in Maine that billionaires should not exist and suggesting that wealthy individuals who influence elections should face criminal penalties.
The remarks, delivered during a Sunday appearance at a local Elks Club, add another layer of controversy to a campaign already weighed down by questions surrounding Platner’s personal conduct and past statements.
Rather than address the growing list of controversies surrounding his candidacy, Platner focused his attention on attacking wealthy Americans, corporate power, and the Supreme Court’s landmark Citizens United decision.
Platner Pushes Publicly Funded Elections

“If I had my way, elections would last two months, they would be publicly funded, and if a billionaire looked at a TV ad the wrong way, we’d put them in jail,” Platner said.
Platner tied those remarks to his opposition to the Supreme Court’s Citizens United v. FEC ruling, which affirmed the right of individuals, corporations, and organizations to independently spend money on political speech.
The Democrat candidate also discussed overturning the decision through measures including potential Supreme Court reform, raising the possibility of impeaching justices or expanding the size of the court.

Platner repeatedly argued that extreme wealth is evidence of a fundamentally unfair system.
“The fact that Jeff Bezos exists, and the fact that I know someone in Sullivan [in Maine] who works three jobs and pays 60% of her monthly income in rent, those two things are directly connected,” he told the audience.
He later expanded on that argument.

The Democrat went even further, asserting that America’s wealthiest individuals did not earn their fortunes legitimately.
“What’s important to remember is that billionaires don’t exist today because they worked hard,” Platner said.
“Corporations don’t have the consolidated wealth and power they have just because they make good investments.
“They got it because they cheated.”
Platner did not identify any specific acts of wrongdoing by Bezos or other billionaires during his remarks.
Familiar Progressive Messaging

New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani previously argued that billionaires should not exist because of growing economic inequality, while Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) has repeatedly criticized capitalism and concentrated wealth.
Platner has increasingly embraced similar themes as he campaigns across Maine, presenting himself as an economic populist focused on wealth inequality and corporate influence.
Campaign Continues Under Cloud of Controversy

Recent reports have focused on allegations involving his treatment of women, a Nazi-linked tattoo, alleged extramarital sexting, and other past conduct that has generated criticism and negative headlines.
Platner did not address those issues during his appearance.
Instead, he doubled down on a message centered on economic inequality and criticism of wealthy Americans.
The strategy reflects a broader effort by progressive Democrats to focus voter attention on wealth disparities and corporate influence while calling for major structural changes to the political system.
Whether that message resonates with Maine voters remains to be seen as Platner seeks to build support in a state known for its independent streak and traditionally pragmatic politics.
