Well, right on cue, there’s a disturbing new trend exploding online, and once again, innocent people are being turned into props for someone else’s internet stardom and clicks.

In this clip, you’ll see a black teen on a bicycle charging directly at innocent pedestrians while popping wheelies. He came straight at the person, and at the very last second, he swerved away. The goal for this kid is to scare the living daylights out of unsuspecting people in order to get a dramatic reaction on camera.
This trend is called “swerving,” and while the stunt itself isn’t brand new, videos of it are suddenly gaining a lot of traction online.

In the past couple of months, I’ve noted more and more posts on my town’s Facebook page from people concerned about a growing issue of local teenagers riding bikes toward incoming traffic and popping a wheelie or swerving away at the last minute. Needless to say, this puts all involved at risk: the teens on the bikes, the drivers of the cars, and the passengers in the cars. I myself nearly had a heart attack when I recently encountered teens on bikes driving straight at me on the road.
I’ve come to learn that this trend, generally known as “swerving,” is a dangerous trend around the globe, starting from at least a few years ago. I haven’t been able to find statistics on injuries from this practice, but it’s been enough of a concern that legislators in Nassau, NY recently proposed a bike law to try and curb this dangerous practice.
And it’s not even just the act of swerving, which is dangerous enough in and of itself, but people are also filming and posting these swerves on the internet for attention. One video of bikers swerving cars (including police cars) and pedestrians throughout New York City has over 2 million views.
What makes this especially frightening is how helpless the victims look. These poor people are simply walking through a park, crossing a street, or driving home when some lunatic on a bicycle comes barreling straight toward them. They have no idea what the rider plans to do. As far as they can tell, they’re about to get hit.

And what makes matters worse is that people are (understandably) afraid to fight back. These days, nobody knows whether a teen like this is carrying a weapon or if there’s some “mob” of his buddies waiting nearby to pounce.
But sadly, that fear is exactly what feeds these monsters and keeps them going.
Hardly anyone stands up to these people because we all know they’re willing to escalate to deadly force and we’re not.

A bicycle traveling at fast speeds can cause devastating injuries. A direct hit could knock someone backward onto concrete, break bones, cause a traumatic brain injury, or kill someone who never saw it coming.

We’ve seen this pattern before, right?
Remember the “knockout game,” where thugs would walk up to random, unsuspecting strangers punch them unconscious? Videos and reports of those attacks spread online, with victims sometimes suffering severe injuries or death.
Sure, “swerving” uses bicycles instead of fists, but the pattern is disturbingly familiar. A stranger’s fear and pain become online content, while the person filming gets applause and accolades from a twisted audience that loves this depraved behavior.
Social media has created a global stage for cruelty and sadistic behavior. Every view, share, and laughing emoji tells the next young thug that hurting or terrifying some innocent person is his quickest route to online fame.
The quickest way to put an end to this stuff is to start charging the teens and, when the law allows it, their parents. You’d better believe that if Mom and Dad are facing jail time because of some dangerous online trend, they’ll pay a lot closer attention to what their kids are doing.
