America has always been very welcoming when it comes to immigrants and refugees. Some might argue we’ve actually been way too accommodating, and that’s why we’ve been taken advantage of. But all we asked in return was simple and fair: come here, respect the country, respect the culture, and build a life alongside everyone else. That arrangement only works when guests act like guests and people remember whose country they are in.

What’s happening now blows right past that line. It actually nukes it right off the map.

After President Trump’s comments about Somali refugee programs and the very real fraud scandals tied to them, along with their constant “bitching” and complaining, a school district in Vermont decided the best response was not dialogue, not transparency, and not calming an already tense situation. Instead, they dragged kids and parents into politics and staged a full-blown woke spectacle by lowering the American flag and raising the Somali flag on public school property.

That move didn’t bring unity. It poured gasoline on an already raging fire.

Look, Americans are furious for a reason. Nearly a billion dollars in taxpayer money has been ripped off through welfare fraud tied to Somali networks. Instead of accountability or even basic acknowledgement, critics are shouted down as “racist,” told they’re just jealous, and lectured about how Somalis supposedly “built America.” Now they’re being asked to watch public schools fly foreign flags as a political statement.

This wasn’t a gesture of kindness. It was a political stunt that not only backfired, but it made the situation worse.

President Donald Trump’s remarks on Somali refugees set off a fresh political fight in Vermont this week, but the real flashpoint quickly became a local school district’s decision to raise a Somali flag on public property.

The Winooski School District hoisted the foreign flag Friday, calling it a show of solidarity with Somali families in the community after Trump criticized refugee programs while discussing multimillion-dollar welfare fraud allegations in Minnesota.

“We’re gonna go the wrong way if we keep taking garbage into our country,” Trump said last week. “They have destroyed Minnesota.”

While progressive activists and local officials framed the flag-raising as a welcoming gesture, the move triggered swift backlash online, particularly on X, where critics blasted the district for using public space to fly a non-American flag.

One user urged others to intervene, posting: “Contact them,” alongside a link to the school district’s website.

Others were far less restrained.

“Cut 100% of any funding. And prosecute the enemy for raising a foreign flag with our tax dollars,” wrote Terry K., whose comment drew dozens of views within an hour.

Another X user, posting under the name ThePolishDrunk, called the display “Absolutely un-American and shameful!”

“This BS has to stop,” added Max Creel in a separate post reacting to the flag.

We recently covered another angle of the Somali debate, and it comes down to this: Americans have questions. They’re being told nonstop about “excellence,” but they’re still waiting to see the achievements, the integration, and the tangible benefits. After years of fraud, crime, and chaos, it’s fair to ask what America has actually received in return for the enormous cost.

By all factual accounts, these Somali refugees have a very long way to go in terms of providing the “excellence” we’ve been told exists. As it stands now, they’re accused of massive amounts of fraud, soaring crime, and draining US resources. That doesn’t sound like “excellence” by any practical standard. Add to that the fact that Tim Walz, a man whom Trump accused of being “retarded,” was duped by these people who, according to that UNESCO study, have a 68 IQ on average. That doesn’t bode well for Mr. Walz’s “excellence” either.

At some point, Americans deserve more than lectures and these silly, woke, performative stunts. They deserve a straightforward, humble apology for a massive theft that took a billion taxpayer dollars, along with real accountability for everyone involved. That means names, consequences, and a serious plan that guarantees this never happens again, even if it makes powerful people uncomfortable or puts them behind bars.

Respect is a two-way street. If you come to another country asking for opportunity, safety, and generosity, the absolute bare minimum you can give back is gratitude and respect for the people footing the bill. You are a guest in someone else’s home. Waving foreign flags, dismissing legitimate concerns as “racist,” and refusing to answer for fraud only deepens the divide. Americans are not asking for miracles. They are asking for honesty, accountability, and a little basic human decency and gratitude.
