For eons now, tourism has been sold as a win-win: travelers got culture and escape, and locals got cash and opportunity. But that fantasy is breaking down, real fast, thanks to Airbnb and soaring costs.

All over the world, resentment is boiling over. From Mexico City to Madrid, from the Amalfi Coast to Lisbon, locals are watching their cities morph into playgrounds for wealthy tourists and Instagram influencers. And they’re not happy about it. As a matter of fact, they’re downright angry. They’re loud. And in some places, they’re turning violent.

The global tourism boom, which was fueled by cheap flights, Airbnb, and remote workers, has been a dream for developers and governments, but it’s become a flat-out nightmare for the people who actually live in these hotbed cities. Rents are soaring, family businesses are vanishing, and neighborhoods are being hollowed out by gentrification and digital nomads who treat cities like disposable backdrops for their social media content.

And here’s where it gets real ironic…

Now, the tables have turned. Suddenly it’s Mexicans who are furious about outsiders flooding their neighborhoods, driving up rent, and not speaking the language. Of course that sounds familiar. Because that’s exactly what’s happening to us, only it’s not digital nomads bringing laptops and tourist dollars. It’s a tsunami of illegals who cross our border, drain our resources, and give absolutely nothing back.

The difference here is that the so-called “digital invaders” in Mexico’s are at least there legally, spending money and boosting the economy. America’s illegal invaders are bleeding us dry. Yet when Americans raise a concern, we’re labeled “racist” or “xenophobic.” Funny how the outrage looks a whole lot more justified when they’re the ones being overrun.

Just look at what illegals are costing American taxpayers, not just in dollars, but in crime and chaos, too.

Truth Now:

America can survive a budget deficit. It cannot survive a mass invasion.

It costs over $600 billion /year for illegal aliens and will cost $160 Billion/ year to deport them.

We simply can’t sustain this.

Meanwhile, the violent backlash in Mexico caught the attention of city officials, who condemned the violence but can’t ignore the bigger issue: gentrification is pushing out locals. The city’s own governor even admitted it, saying, “Mexico City does not agree with gentrification.”

Protests in Mexico City against a surge in tourism and rising prices turned violent on Friday night, damaging over a dozen businesses and drawing condemnation from officials. The demonstration reflected the growing frustrations of many of the capital’s residents, who have watched rents skyrocket and old neighborhoods turn into swanky developments as the city has become a major tourist destination and a base for many so-called digital nomads.

The protest also prompted criticism from some officials, who denounced the violence and what they said were the protests’ nativist bent. The protest was initially peaceful. Hundreds of people marched through the streets, carrying signs sporting messages like, “Your new home is an invasion,” “We shouldn’t feel like foreigners in our own land,” and “Expat = gentrifier,” photos and videos of the protests showed. It turned violent when a small group of protesters began smashing the windows of storefronts, including a Starbucks and a bank, and graffiting walls and ransacking stores in the high-end neighborhoods of Condesa and Roma, according to The Associated Press. Fifteen businesses were affected and some cars were vandalized in the protests, Mexico City’s government secretary, César Cravioto, said in an interview with Milenio, a Mexican news outlet. He urged an end to violent marches with “xenophobic” messages, saying that Mexico City “is a city of migrants,” and that the city’s government does not agree with “this type of demonstration.”

In a statement, the governor of Mexico City, Carla Brugada, recognized the problems gentrification has caused, saying her administration was working to bolster affordable housing. “Mexico City does not agree with gentrification,” she said. “We know that gentrification can exclude those who have lived all their lives in their neighborhoods.”

The images are disturbing and likely ruined a few people’s vacations.

Masked protesters were seen throwing rocks through glass windows of high-end stores, while graffiti on shattered windows read, “Get out of Mexico.”

Marchers then continued on to protest outside the U.S. Embassy and chanted inside the city’s metro system. Police reinforcements gathered outside the Embassy building as police sirens rung out in the city center Friday evening.

This is becoming a fast-spreading problem, and it’s likely to only get worse.

And if you think this is just a Mexico issue, think again. The same thing is happening all over Europe.

Over in Europe, protests are spreading across Italy, Spain, and Portugal, countries that rely heavily on tourism but are now cracking under its weight. Locals are taking to the streets, spraying anti-tourist graffiti on walls, and even squirting water pistols at sunburnt visitors clogging up their neighborhoods.

This isn’t just some random tantrum. It’s turning into a full-blown revolt.

In Paris, employees are walking off the job.

But here’s the kicker: many of the same people gleefully protesting tourists with money in their wallets have nothing to say about the endless flood of illegal migrants pouring into their countries—and these are people who drain public services, strain housing and healthcare, and contribute absolutely nothing in return. No protests, no graffiti, no rage over any of that. Just silence.

And that silence says everything, right?

It’s almost as if the global progressive class would prefer locals to direct their outrage at Western tourists, who are easy targets and who can’t fight back, instead of focusing on the real problem: mass illegal immigration that’s reshaping entire countries, overwhelming infrastructure, and bankrupting national identity.

The Louvre in Paris has temporarily shut down operations after its employees walked out to protest tourism. Thousands of stranded and confused visitors were corralled into unmoving lines at the glass pyramid.

The protest is a part of a series of coordinated anti-tourism protests across southern Europe in Mallorca, Venice, Lisbon and elsewhere.

Europe’s only value is its tourism, and it’s the only way they can really stay afloat as they continue to deindustrialize.

This is all very, very stupid. They’ll protest tourism but not illegal immigration and asylum seekers. Make it make sense.

But the problem isn’t just about “too many tourists.” It’s about a broken system. A tourism model that drives up housing costs, kills off local culture, creates low-wage jobs, and concentrates wealth in the hands of a few elite landlords and corporations. In Madrid, there are more than 66,000 illegal tourist rentals. Imagine trying to find an apartment when half the housing is being gobbled up by weekend benders on Airbnb.

Governments are scrambling to regulate, but so far, many believe it’s been mostly performative. Spain’s left-wing coalition delivered some soundbites about rent caps and more housing, but nobody took any meaningful action. The same story is unfolding in Italy.

The cost of living in cities like Florence and Venice is absolutely killing the locals, who are being pushed further and further out while their homes are turned into boutique hotels and photo ops for Instagram models.

After coordinated protests across Europe last weekend, it’s easy for the ethically conscious tourist to feel uncertain. Across southern Europe – and particularly in Spain, Italy and Portugal – there are headlines blaming visitors for everything from overcrowding to housing shortages. In gentrifying neighbourhoods, slogans such as “Tourists go home” have appeared on walls and windows, with some angry residents grabbing headlines by squirting water pistols at tourists.

Does that mean a golden age of tourism is over? No. Does the complicated relationship between those who want to visit the world’s most interesting places and those who live in them need a reset? Probably.

For the most part, protesters are calling for a total overhaul of a model of tourism that, they argue, drives up housing costs, harms the environment and creates low-paid, unstable jobs – while concentrating profits in the hands of a few. […] This is not just a story of tourists replacing local people; it’s one of policy failure and economic imbalance.

In Madrid, decent food is often still relatively affordable – but the same can’t be said for accommodation. The charming, no-frills guesthouses with lace curtains and wrought-iron balconies are disappearing fast, and the gap they leave behind is being filled by unlicensed rentals in former homes. There are roughly 15,000 illegal tourist apartments in Madrid alone, rising to more than 66,000 across the country.

Yes, tourism needs reform. But let’s not pretend that backpackers and honeymooners are the true threat to these countries. The far bigger issue, and the one nobody on the left dares to confront, is the open-border invasion bleeding Europe (and America) dry.

Funny how the media will cover smashed Starbucks windows in Mexico but not the towns crushed by illegal immigration in Italy, Spain, or Texas, for that matter.
