Two lawmakers from Minnesota and their spouses were shot by a man who was allegedly posing as a police officer, according to several reports on Saturday.

Governor Tim Walz (D-MN) confirmed the incident in a post on X, though he initially withheld detailed information. As reported by 5 EYEWITNESS NEWS’ Tom Hauser, citing unnamed sources, State Senator John Hoffman was shot in Champlin, while State House Speaker Melissa Hortman was shot in Brooklyn Park.

Both legislators are Democrats.

FOX 9 reported that the shootings occurred at the lawmakers’ respective homes, and their spouses were also wounded. According to Fox News, Hoffman and his spouse have undergone surgery and are expected to recover. However, reports state that Hortman and her spouse succumbed to their injuries.

“I’ve activated the State Emergency Operations Center,” Walz wrote on X. “Local law enforcement in Champlin and Brooklyn Park have the full resources of the State of Minnesota behind them. We are monitoring the situation closely and will share more information soon.”

“Our state lost a great leader,” Walz stated during a Saturday morning press conference. “Speaker Hortman was someone who served the people of Minnesota with grace, compassion, humor and a sense of service.”

“The Hoffmans are out of surgery at this time and receiving care, and we are cautiously optimally optimistic, they will survive this assassination attempt,” he added.

“This was an act of targeted political violence,” Walz said. “Peaceful discourse is the foundation of our democracy. We don’t settle their differences with violence or at gunpoint in the state of Minnesota.”

Law enforcement described the suspect as armed and dangerous, urging the public not to approach him. He is believed to be a white male with brown hair, wearing black body armor. A shelter-in-place alert was issued for residents in the affected areas.

According to reports, the suspect closely resembled a legitimate police officer—donning similar attire and equipment—and even driving a police-style SUV equipped with lights.

“The suspect exploited the trust our uniforms represent… This betrayal is deeply disturbing,” said Public Safety Commissioner Bob Jacobson, as quoted by Fox News.

Reports also indicate the suspect exchanged gunfire with officers upon their arrival before fleeing the scene. The shootings are being labeled as politically driven “assassination” attempts.

The FBI is now assisting in the investigation. A law enforcement source told CNN that authorities are searching for a male wearing black body armor and a blue shirt, who may have been impersonating law enforcement.

“This is a stunning act of violence. I’m thankful for all the law enforcement who are responding in real time,” U.S. Sen. Amy Klobuchar (D-Minn.) said in her post. “My prayers are with the Hortman and Hoffman families. Both legislators are close friends and devoted to their families and public service.”
