Hoo Boy: Mamdani Drops Another Idea to 'Help' Affordability - It May Be One of His Worst Yet

As we have been seeing, New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani is a festival of bad radical ideas. 

He just dropped a big pied-à-terre tax on people. Not only is that a bad idea, but he also published the names and addresses of the "wealthy" people, which could then put them at risk. And as we noted, the "list" seemed to include a lot of people/residences it wasn't even supposed to include. So it was both wrong and incompetent.

However, that's just the start of the crazy. There's more. Not only is he planning on setting up a government-run grocery store in each of the five boroughs, but he also claims they will sell "essential staples" at 30 percent cheaper than regular retail. 

Today, I am proud to announce a collection of essential staples that will be predictably 30% cheaper at all five of our city-run grocery stores. This core set of goods will include all fresh produce, meat, and seafood, along with 20 other essential items like cheese, milk, and bread. 

Here's how it will work. Once a month, our five city-run grocery stores will set prices for this core set of goods at 30% below typical retail prices. No exceptions, no gimmicks. The savings will last for the entire month. That means no weekly fluctuations or sticker shock at the checkout line—not for our seniors living on fixed incomes, nor for the parents who rely on a regular supply of apple slices to keep toddler tantrums at bay.

So obviously there are some big problems with this. 

How can you operate at 30 percent below retail? The answer is you can only do that at a loss, and you can only do that by using taxpayer dollars. He's already using taxpayer dollars to set these up. So taxpayers will be paying more to underwrite this effort to make him and socialism look palatable. 

They, of course, aren't saying now how much it would cost taxpayers to subsidize this. They will have to restrict how much you can buy and/or there will be empty shelves. 

The regular stores and bodegas who can't operate that way will be undercut, lose business, and could go under. You know the bodega guys — the actual working people Mamdani claims he cares about.

What would leftists say if a chain store moved into a neighborhood and did this? They'd be screaming their heads off at how predatory they were. 

That's just the start of the problems that could result. 

Juan Carlos Santiago, a Cuban immigrant from the neighborhood, said the gambit sounds suspiciously similar to conditions on the communist island he fled. 

“Cost less sounds very good,” Santiago said. “They did this where I come from. I grew up with this.

“In the end, it all costs more, and you get less,” he said. "Thank God, here you can go to another store. Thank God!”

Yet leftists were enthralled, saying, "Wow, he's making everything affordable!"

Most people, however, got it.
