Can the Trump Musk Feud Be Resolved?

When giants clash, the ripple effects are felt far beyond the headlines. In a political moment already struggling to defeat the status quo, the feud between President Trump and Elon Musk, two of the most powerful figures in America, could have consequences no one is prepared for. What’s really fueling the tension—and is there still time to pull back from the brink?
Appearing on “This Past Weekend” with Theo Von, Vice President JD Vance addressed the escalating feud between President Trump and Elon Musk, calling the situation a “huge mistake,” and warning that a prolonged clash between the two titans of American influence could end up harming both—and the country.
The conversation was sparked when Theo Von brought up a recent controversial post from Musk that implied Trump’s name was in the Epstein files. “This is the real reason they have not been made public. Have a nice day.’” Von was clearly taken aback by the blunt accusation. Vance hadn’t yet seen the post, but immediately dismissed the insinuation: “Absolutely not. Donald Trump didn’t do anything wrong with Jeffrey Epstein. Whatever the Democrats and the media say about him, that’s totally BS.”
Vance was emphatic about where his loyalty stands. “My loyalties are always going to be with the president,” he said. That loyalty, however, didn’t come with blind antagonism toward Musk. In fact, Vance had plenty of praise for the tech mogul, calling him “an incredible entrepreneur” and saying, “This sort of effort to root out waste, fraud, and abuse in our country is really good.”

Despite Musk’s incendiary rhetoric, Vance still hopes there’s a path back. “I hope that eventually Elon kind of comes back into the fold. Maybe that’s not possible now, because he’s gone so nuclear. But I hope it is, man.”
So what’s driving the rift? According to Vance, it’s a mix of political inexperience and real-world consequences for Musk’s ventures. “Elon’s new to politics, right? His businesses are being attacked nonstop. They’re literally firebombing some of his cars.” Vance said some of those incidents are being looked at as “acts of terrorism” by the Department of Justice. He framed Musk’s growing frustration as understandable, even if misplaced. “I get the frustration,” Vance said. “If you’re a business leader, you probably get frustrated with the process because it’s more bureaucratic, more slow-moving.”
The senator also pushed back on criticisms of Trump’s signature legislation, the “One Big, Beautiful Bill,” which some—including Musk—have claimed didn’t go far enough. “It’s a good bill. It’s not a perfect bill,” Vance admitted, but added, “The main purpose of the bill is to prevent the biggest tax increase.”
Ultimately, Vance urged a return to unity for the sake of the broader movement. “If he and the President are in some blood feud… most importantly, it’s going to be bad for the country,” he said. “But I don’t think it’s going to be good for either of them.”

Vance made it clear that President Trump has no desire to escalate the feud with Elon Musk. Speaking candidly, Vance acknowledged that Trump was “getting a little frustrated,” and felt “some of the criticisms were unfair coming from Elon,” but suggested that Trump has chosen to take the high road.
“He’s been very restrained,” Vance said, noting that Trump “doesn’t think that he needs to be in a blood feud with Elon Musk.” Vance expressed hope that things could still be patched up, adding, “Hopefully, Elon figures it out, comes back into the fold.” His advice? “If Elon chilled out a little bit, everything would be fine.”

Let’s hope Vance is right. Because if there’s anyone who can help deescalate this mess and bring both sides back to the table, it’s someone who still sees the bigger picture. The movement is stronger when its leaders are united, not at war. For the sake of the country—and everything this moment represents—let’s pray cooler heads prevail.
