Trump confirms Tuesday meeting between US and Iran in Qatar after strikes

By Ryan King

President Trump confirmed Monday that American and Iranian officials will meet Tuesday in Qatar after a volley of strikes between the two sides threatened to derail the fragile cease-fire.

"Iran has requested a meeting. It will take place tomorrow in Doha," Trump wrote in all capital letters on Truth Social.

Tehran has yet to confirm the talks are set to take place. Officials claimed over the weekend that the two sides agreed to cease hostilities.

Iranian drones had targeted a cargo ship last week, which prompted the US to fire off a barrage of strikes against the Islamic Republic in response. Iran then hit targets in Bahrain and Kuwait in response.

The violence threatened to upend peace talks between the two sides under the memorandum of understanding.

Florida Sen. Rick Scott vented about the conjecture he is facing that he has his sights set on Senate Majority Leader John Thune's leadership perch.

Scott (R-Fla.), who helms the Steering Committee, helped organize a lunch with President Trump last week amid friction with the Senate GOP. The senator also put out a letter detailing a plan for navigating the 2026 midterm elections.

“Here’s what I don’t get,” Scott told Politico. “Other people get to put out their position. If I put out mine, then I want to be leader?”

Scott previously vied for the leadership role at the end of 2024 and challenged Thune's predecessor, Mitch McConnell, in 2022.

"As far as we're concerned, we're holding up our end of the cease-fire. Violence will be met with violence," White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt said Monday on "Fox & Friends."

In addition to the envoys, technical teams will meet on the sidelines in Doha to hash out phase two of the Memorandum of Understanding. Under the terms of the cease-fire, phase two will see negotiators come to agreement on the future of Tehran's nuclear program.
