Security beefed up at Long Island CVS where 'angel' worker was slain Christmas Day: 'Our hearts ache'
Security was beefed up Sunday at a Long Island CVS where a beloved worker was fatally stabbed Christmas Day, as shattered customers remembered the victim as a sweet “angel” who always had a kind word.
The Lindenhurst outlet of the pharmacy behemoth now has a ’round-the-clock private guard in the wake of the slaying of 23-year-old Edeedson Cine, who took the holiday shift so a coworker could spend the time with their family, employees at the store told The Post.
“It’s crazy right? After it’s too late, they get security,” an employee told The Post.
“He was such a sweet guy,” the worker said of Cine. “When he went out on lunch break, he didn’t even say anything to you, he would just come back and have a slice of pizza for you. He was so thoughtful and such a nice person.”
Accused killer John Pilaccio, 43, is now being held without bail after being arraigned on second-degree murder charges.
The debt-riddled defendant allegedly killed Cine while demanding cash, authorities have said.
Outside the store Sunday, mourning customers and coworkers began a memorial for the young victim, with bouquets of flowers, candles and even a t-shirt sprouting up next to the front entrance.
“I was thinking of him all day,” CVS patron Jaiminique Etienne said as she placed flowers there with her 5-year-old daughter in tow. “I cried when I saw [Cine’s] picture. I bought flowers inside and brought them out here. Every time I was here, he was super nice.
“He’d tell you, ‘Your hair looks beautiful’ and make you smile,” said Etienne, 34. “Last week, I was holiday-shopping for stocking stuffers, and he took the time to be nice and tell me about his family and asked about my family, and then Monday I came in, and he was playing with my daughter.”
Police said Pilaccio entered the store just before 7 p.m., about an hour before closing, looking for cash when he stabbed Cine in the chest and ran off.
Pilaccio was arrested Friday and arraigned in Suffolk County court Saturday.
A GoFundMe page set up by Cine’s family had raised more than $80,000 by Sunday afternoon.
“He had a fierce heart for service, and his love for his family and friends was unwavering,” Cine’s family wrote on the site. “That love will continue to live on through all who were blessed to know him.
“While our hearts ache from this loss, we hold firmly to our faith,” they said. “Though Eddy’s time on earth was brief, we trust that God’s plan is greater than our understanding and that he now rests, awaiting his eternal peace, surrounded by God’s love.”
His father told The Post on Saturday that his son “was the kind of person who would step in front of a bullet for anyone.
“He would volunteer for the tough assignments. He was simple, and I loved that about my son.”
Cine had worked at the CVS for about 10 months — long enough to make a lasting impression on many of his customers.
“This is our pharmacy, and every time I was attended by him, I was always struck by how gentle he was, how kind he was,” said Frank Cruz, 70, on Sunday as he stopped in with his wife, Sonia Cruz.
“His parents really did a great job,” he said of Cine. “He was the most gentle and soft-spoken person. This whole community is very saddened by the loss of this boy. We’re all affected. I can’t stop thinking of his mother, his poor mother.”
Pilaccio is due back in court Wednesday.
