Australia carries out "strict biosecurity controls at its borders" to stop 100,000 imported cockroaches from destroying the local ecosystem

Funny how the enforced get closed for certain kind of infestations that threaten native populations but not for others, eh?

Did anybody else have this initial reaction?

The Madagascar hissing cockroach is one of the largest cockroaches on Earth, measuring about 2-3 inches long, but they're not that big! The Australian cockroach, however, only grows to about 1.5 inches.

From the article:

The haul of Madagascar hissing cockroaches and dubia cockroaches, worth 200,000 Australian dollars ($142,000), was seized in May from a commercial breeder in the city of Bathurst in the state of New South Wales, according to Australia's Department of Climate Change, Energy, Environment and Water.

Yes, Australia has a Department of Climate Change, Energy, Environment, and Water. That's a real thing.

Both Madagascar hissing and dubia cockroaches are illegal to import into Australia. They can't be legally kept, bred, or sold no matter how they were obtained, the department said in a statement.

These exotic species could potentially wreck native wildlife, spread disease, or — heaven forbid — start their own little roach civilization Down Under. In this situation, the government is a necessity (sorry libertarians).

Australia has strict biosecurity controls at its borders to protect its agriculture and horticulture sectors and native wildlife from pest infestations.

Wait, so you're telling me that importing a totally foreign element into a native environment could wreak untold havoc on said civilization - err, environment - and borders must be enforced to protect the native residents?? 🤯

The bugs will now be "humanely euthanized" and probably eaten by global warming activists.

An expert told the Australian Broadcasting Corporation the bugs are likely used as food for people's pet reptiles. With their size and the black market pricing, they're probably nice and cheap.

Well, not anymore!

At publishing time, no charges have been made against the breeder.
