President Donald Trump this week said that he did not wish to negotiate with the Iranian government as fighting renewed in the Persian Gulf, citing the failure of prior deals with the regime.

Active fighting resumed this week, with Trump ordering strikes on an array of Iranian targets. The attacks came just weeks after Iran and the U.S. signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) that was meant to extend the ceasefire by 60 days.

Speaking to Fox News, Trump stated that "I don’t want to negotiate now. I said, ‘Let’s not negotiate.’ Three days ago, we had a deal.” 

His remarks come amid polling data suggesting that the American public expects a long war. Trump himself has declared victory dozens of times throughout the conflict and repeatedly claimed that Iran was prepared to agree to U.S. terms, only for such concessions to not materialize.
