Andy Burnham appears to be the likely successor to former British Prime Minister Keir Starmer following a show of overwhelming support from Labour Party lawmakers.
Burnham said on Thursday that he received nominations from 322 out of the 403 Labour members of parliament on the first day of nominations, just shy of the 323 he needs to ensure he's the only candidate, Reuters reported.
The nominations for the Labour leadership close next Thursday, and Burnham is expected to be formally chosen as Labour leader by next Friday. He would then be officially named as prime minister on July 20.
Some Labour members of parliament said they weren't able to vote but will back Burnham when they return to parliament next week.
