Lawyers for the man accused of killing conservative activist Charlie Kirk are hoping a judge will block prosecutors from introducing a statement that describes the traditional Christian values Kirk held.

During a prelimary hearing that continues this week, defense attorney Richard Novak said the values of Turning Point USA, which Kirk founded, don't say anything about Tyler Robinson, who is accused of shooting Kirk, the Associated Press reported

The judge ruled that the statement, which is from Turning Point USA board member David Engelhardt, is relevant and would be "provisionally admitted." A final decision, the judge said, would come at a later day.

Robinson's lawyers are also expected on Wednesday to continue scrutinizing the DNA testing that prosecutors argue links Robinson to the suspected murder weapon.

A member of the defense team questioned a DNA analyst from the FBI on Tuesday about the methods used to connect Robison to a rifle round found wrapped inside a towel at Utah Valley University, where Kirk was shot while speaking to students in September,

Deputy Utah County Attorney Ryan McBride argued that the reliability of the DNA testing could be examined if the case goes to trial, and said a preliminary trial is not the proper venue to take up the issue.

“The court is going to determine if it meets the threshold of reliability at trial," McBride said.
