Hinds County District Attorney Jody Owens resigned on Monday and pleaded guilty to a conspiracy charge in a federal bribery case in Mississippi that extends back to 2024, when the first people were indicted in the case.
Owens was initially charged back in October 2024 with conspiracy, federal program bribery, wire fraud, money laundering and making false statements, according to a report by local outlet WAPT.
The case came out of a 2022 FBI undercover operation in which the agents posed as real estate developers looking to build a convention center hotel in downtown Jackson, according to Fox News.
According to federal prosecutors, Owens accepted at least $115,000 in cash plus promises of more if he would help get the project approved through city government channels.
