Bonny Tyler, who sung the 1983 hit "Total Eclipse of the Heart," has died. She was 75.

A statement from her family on Tyler's website said that she was hospitalized in May in Faro for emergency intestinal surgery, the Associated Press reported. She had been placed in an induced coma, and last month, it appeared her health was improving and would recover. She was being treated for an illness in Portugal when she died unexpectedly Wednesday night, according to the statement.

“Bonnie’s family and team are heartbroken to announce that Bonnie unexpectedly passed away last night in hospital in Portugal as a result of the illness that she was being treated for,” her family said.

The Welsh singer earned three Grammy nominations. "Total Eclipse of the Heart" has had more than 1 billion streams.
